Sociological Turn-Taking

2019
Three possible forms of progress are considered: the emergence of new fields of study, the adoption of new theoretical perspectives and the contribution of certain celebrated scholars. The problem with the first is that “new” fields of study often turn to be new in name only, while also not necessarily focused on addressing core issues.

Turn-Taking Prediction Based on Detection of Transition Relevance Place

Interspeech, 2019
We address turn-taking prediction in which spoken dialogue systems predict when to take the conversational floor. In natural conversations, many turn-taking decisions are arbitrary and subjective. In this study, we propose taking into account the concept

Turn‐taking patterns in deaf conversation

Journal of Sociolinguistics, 2001

Analysis of Effect and Timing of Fillers in Natural Turn-Taking

Interspeech, 2019
Turn-taking for spoken dialogue systems is still below the speed of real human conversation due to latency in speech and natural language processing, but fillers can be used by the system to take the turn more quickly without sacrificing naturalness.

Turn-taking in Korean conversation

Journal of Pragmatics, 2016
Abstract On the basis of Sacks et al.’s (1974) turn-taking model, I explore the flexibility of the Korean turn-taking system. Noting first that speakers bring a turn to a stop without projected final turn elements, I propose that the turn stop is a legitimate completion specifiable as a transition-relevance place (TRP).

Turn-taking in Shakespeare

2019
Abstract Whenever people talk to one another, there are at least two things going on at once. First, and most obviously, there is an exchange of speech. Second, and slightly less obviously, there is a negotiation about how that exchange is organized—about whose turn it is to talk at any given moment.
