Batteries From Reused, Recycled, and Surplus Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, Volume 10, Issue 7, July 2026.
Batteries can become more circular by combining reuse, direct recycling, metallurgical recovery, and material sourcing from industrial surplus streams. This Review highlights how recycled and waste‐derived metals, carbons, polymers, electrolytes, and active materials can be reintegrated into current and emerging batteries, while emphasizing design ...

Unveiling the High‐Voltage Reactivity and Gas Evolution With Aluminum‐Based Chloride and Oxychloride Catholytes in Solid‐State Sodium Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, Volume 16, Issue 25, 1 July 2026.
The work examines the electrochemical and interfacial behaviors of crystalline NaAlCl4 and amorphous Na–Al–oxychloride solid electrolytes with NaNi0.5Mn0.5O2 cathodes. Operando gas evolution and ToF‐SIMS analyses highlight that pure chloride solid electrolytes offer greater interfacial stability and safety compared to the oxychloride solid electrolytes

Silicon‐Based Anodes for Sulfide Solid‐State Batteries: Failure Mechanisms and Multiscale Design Strategies

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, Volume 16, Issue 26, 8 July 2026.
Silicon anodes in sulfide SSBs face coupled electrochemo‐mechanical failure by interface instability. This review examined recent advances and proposed mitigation strategies via material‐, electrode/interface‐, and cell‐level‐ engineering. We further evaluate scalable synthesis of sulfide SEs.

Structure, Overpotentials, and Durability in a Single Lineage of CO2‐Activated Carbons: Insights for Near‐Neutral Zn–Air Battery Cathodes

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, Volume 9, Issue 7, July 2026.
A single‐lineage series of CO2‐activated carbons reveals how surface area, pore architecture, and defect density govern near‐neutral Zn–air battery cathodes. Moderate activation at 75% burn‐off balances energy efficiency and cyclability, whereas deeper activation increases power through mesopore formation but compromises durability. Zinc–air batteries (
