Sense, Model and Identify the Load Signatures of HVAC Systems in Metro Stations

open access: yes, 2013
The HVAC systems in subway stations are energy consuming giants, each of which may consume over 10, 000 Kilowatts per day for cooling and ventilation. To save energy for the HVAC systems, it is critically important to firstly know the "load signatures ...

Towards design of prognostics and health management solutions for maritime assets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
With increase in competition between OEMs of maritime assets and operators alike, the need to maximize the productivity of an equipment and increase operational efficiency and reliability is increasingly stringent and challenging. Also, with the adoption

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Study on microstructure evolution and deformation behavior of Mg– Zn base alloy pipes during hot bending

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
The strong basal fiber texture of magnesium (Mg) alloy pipes usually leads to poor secondary forming performance. In this study, Mg–2Zn-0.4Ce-0.4Mn (ZME) and Mg–2Zn-0.4Ce-0.4Mn-0.2Ca (ZMEX) pipes were prepared.

Centimeter to decimeter hollow concretions and voids in Gale Crater sediments, Mars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Voids and hollow spheroids between ∼1 and 23 cm in diameter occur at several locations along the traverse of the Curiosity rover in Gale crater, Mars. These hollow spherical features are significantly different from anything observed in previous landed ...

Adjustment of Coatings Morphology and Particle Distribution of Layered Silicates by Freeze‐Drying for Improved Gas Barriers

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Freeze‐drying of layered silicate is the key to get coatings with superior gas barrier. Freeze‐drying of layered silicates modified with dodecylamine (DDA) is a highly effective technique for the preparation of barrier pigments that significantly mitigate the permeation of oxygen, water vapor, and hydrogen through polymer films containing these ...

Automatic pulmonary artery-vein separation in CT images using a twin-pipe network and topology reconstruction

open access: yesPeerJ Computer Science, 2023
Background With the wide application of CT scanning, the separation of pulmonary arteries and veins (A/V) based on CT images plays an important role for assisting surgeons in preoperative planning of lung cancer surgery. However, distinguishing between arteries and veins in chest CT images remains challenging due to the complex structure and the ...

Reduction of Oxide Inclusions During the High‐Frequency Welding of Steel via a Nonthermal Ar/H2 Plasma Jet

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐frequency (HF) welding of steel is limited by oxide inclusions that degrade weld quality. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the integration of a nonthermal Ar/H2 dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma jet into HF welding. Local plasma treatment provides effective shielding and in‐situ oxide reduction, resulting in markedly fewer and ...

Reactivation of contraction in detergent-lysed teleost retinal cones. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
Teleost retinal cones contract in the light and elongate in the dark. In the green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus, the necklike myoid region of the cone contracts from as much as 120 micrometers (midnight dark-adapted) to 6 micrometers in fully light-adapted

Influence of an Argon/Silane Atmosphere on the Temperature of a Thermal Plasma

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of a silane‐doped argon atmosphere on the chemical composition and temperature of a thermal nontransferring argon plasma is investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. As a result of the high amount of free electrons resulting from the stepwise ionization and dissociation of the silane molecule, even a silane addition of 0.01 vol ...
