Development of the twin-roll casting process
Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 1995Abstract Twin-roll casting has been used for approximately 40 years for the production of aluminium strip. Traditionally, the process has been one of low productivity and has been restricted to a limited range of alloys and a minimum cast thickness of approximately 6 mm.

The twin-roll strip casting of magnesium
JOM, 2004Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organization has been working since 2000 to develop twin-roll strip casting of magnesium alloy. The primary objective was to significantly reduce the manufacturing cost of the magnesium sheet through the twin-roll casting process.

As-Cast Microstructure and Texture of Twin-Roll Cast AZ31
2014In this study, the microstructure and texture of twin roll cast (TRC) AZ31 (Mg-3wt.%Al-1wt.%Zn) alloy has been investigated. The structure of the as-cast TRC AZ31 was dendritic containing both columnar and equiaxed grains. Second phase particles, Al-Mn and Mg-Al-Zn, were distributed evenly in matrix.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Applied to Twin-Roll Casting
Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, 1998Abstract Near-net-shape casting technology is one of the most important research areas in the iron and steel industry today. Driving forces for the development of this technology include a reduction in the number of operations needed for conventionally produced strip. This is especially true of hot rolling operations.

Research on the Rolling of AZ31 Strip Prepared by Twin Roll Casting
Materials Science Forum, 2009The AZ31 thin sheet (minimum thickness less than 1mm) was obtained by rolling the cast strip which was prepared by vertical twin roll casting in this paper. Since the absolute deformation during rolling was smaller, due to the small thickness of the strip of 3mm, the rolling of cast strip was different from the conventional rolling process. It was found

Analysis of Thermal Stress and Deformation of Casting Roll in Twin Roll Strip Casting Process
Transactions of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers A, 2002The casting roll design is one of the most important requirements in twin roll strip casting process. Coupled analyses of heat transfer and deformation for the cast roll are carried out by use of the finite element program MARC to examine the thermal stress and deformation.

Analysis of Casting Roll Temperature Field during Twin-Roll Thin Strip Casting
Advanced Materials Research, 2008In twin-roll strip casting process, the temperature variation of casting roll can result in roll thermal stress and fatigue. It not only affects the thermal deformation of casting roll and the generation of the roll surface cracks significantly, but also influences the surface quality, shape and profile of the produced strip, and the service life of ...

The status of twin‐roll casting technology
Scandinavian Journal of Metallurgy, 2003Within the coming days the world's first commercial, direct twin‐roll caster for carbon steel strip less than 2.0 mm, without further hot or cold rolling, will be started by Nucor in the United States. Although the process has been previously proven on a technical basis during full‐scale development in Australia, the Nucor caster is unique in that it ...

Influence of Temperature and Rolling Speed on Twin Roll Cast Strip
2013Reducing vehicle weight and emissions by lightweight design is a major goal of the automotive industry. Magnesium as the lightest structural metal offers a significant weight saving potential compared to steel and aluminum. Cast magnesium components are widely used, e.g. as engine blocks or gear box housings.

Design of a composite roll for twin-roll casting of Mg-AZ31
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, 2016In twin-roll casting, as heat is transferred from melt to rolls, the melt is cooled, solidified and finally rolled to a specific thickness. Therefore, an efficient cooling system for the roll is very important for a stable operation of the process. In the present study, a composite roll with internal cooling channels was designed for twin-roll casting ...
