Twin-twin transfusion syndrome

Hospital Medicine, 1999
Twin–twin transfusion syndrome is a complication of monochorionic twin pregnancies associated with extremely high perinatal morbidity and mortality. This article describes the ultrasound features associated with this condition and possible pathophysiological mechanisms.

The Monozygotic Twinning Process, the Twin-twin Transfusion Syndrome and Acardiac Twins

Placenta, 2009
This paper suggests that during the time of the "splitting process" that produces monozygotic twins the number of cells may not be evenly distributed to the future twins. The outcome of this 'irregular division' may be the twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome and acardiac twins.

Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome

Postgraduate Medicine, 1970
Plethora in one of a pair of monozygotic twins and pallor in the other are now understood as evidence of intrauterine transfer of blood by way of vascular anastomoses in the placenta. The artery-to-vein type of communication acts as an arteriovenous shunt. The syndrome is an important cause of fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome

2016
Twins can either be dizygotic (70%) or monozygotic (30%). Dizygotic twins result from the fertilization of two eggs, and there is a separate placenta and amniotic sac for each twin. Dizygotic twin pregnancies are, therefore, by definition dichorionic diamniotic and the few reported exceptions of dizygotic monochorionic twins due to fusion of two ...

Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome

Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 1963
The twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome is an easily identified circulatory disease of twins which imposes immediate, serious, and critically different handicaps on each of identical twin newborns. The syndrome is characterized by severe anemia in one twin and intense plethora in the other; and it is due to unbalanced vascular mixing due to anastomotic ...

`Twin' Psoriasis in Monozygotic Twins

Archives of Dermatology, 1984
To the Editor.— Psoriasis in concordant, monozygotic twin pairs tends to be similar, with respect to age of onset, distribution pattern, severity, and course. 1,2 The similarity in the behavior of the disease has been ascribed to the fact that both patients have two basic factors in common, ie, identical genetic endowment and nearly identical ...

Twin–Twin Transfusion Syndrome

Seminars in Perinatology, 2012
Twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a serious condition that affects 10% to 15% of twin pregnancies with monochorionic diamniotic placentation. The pathophysiology of TTTS is not completely understood; however, the presence of unbalanced placental vascular communications within a shared circulation has been implicated in its development.

The twin–twin transfusion syndrome

Seminars in Neonatology, 2002
The aetiology of twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), which affects 10-15% of monochorionic (MC) twin pregnancies, remains poorly understood. Although all MC twins have placental vascular anastomoses, unbalanced intertwin transfusion has been shown by ex vivo injection and in vivo Doppler studies of chorionic plate vasculature to be mediated by > or =

Twin–twin transfusion syndrome

Clinics in Perinatology, 2003
The understanding and management of twin-twin transfusion syndrome has evolved significantly over the past few years. Improved and standardized sonographic diagnostic criteria, understanding of the heterogeneic nature of the syndrome, development of an anatomical and reproducible surgical technique for the identification of vascular anastomoses, and ...

Twin–Twin Transfusion Syndrome Modeling

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2007
Abstract:  The twin–twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a severe complication occurring in monochorionic twins, and untreated, causes high rates of mortality and morbidity. In TTTS, five consecutive stages of increasing severity can be distinguished: first, the oligopolyhydramnios sequence; second, anuria in the donor twin; third, abnormal flow waves ...
