Economics-Based Optimization of Unstable Flows

open access: yes, 1999
As an example for the optimization of unstable flows, we present an economics-based method for deciding the optimal rates at which vehicles are allowed to enter a highway.

HEADWAY MODELING IN NORTHERN IRAQI TWO-LANE HIGHWAYS

open access: yesAcademic Journal of Nawroz University, 2018
Headway is the time interval between passages of successive vehicles past a point on the highway. More than 8000 car headways were observed in 10 level and rolling terrain two-lane highways in northern Iraq to find the critical headway and headway distribution and modeling for these highways.

Calibration and development of safety performance functions for two-way stop-control intersections on rural two-lane highways in Louisiana

open access: yesIATSS Research
The first edition of the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) contains a simplistic version of the crash prediction model for two-way stop-controlled intersections (TWSC) on rural two-lane highways.

Heavy Vehicle Performance During Recovery From Forced-Flow Urban Freeway Conditions Due To Incidents, Work Zones and Recurring Congestion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Information contained in the Highway Capacity Manual on the influence heavy vehicles have on freeway traffic operations has been based on few field data collection efforts and relied mostly on traffic simulation efforts.

Distributions of Time- and Distance-Headways in the Nagel-Schreckenberg Model of Vehicular Traffic: Effects of Hindrances

open access: yes, 1998
In the Nagel-Schreckenberg model of vehicular traffic on single-lane highways vehicles are modelled as particles which hop forward from one site to another on a one dimensional lattice and the inter-particle interactions mimic the manner in which the ...

Long-lived states in synchronized traffic flow. Empirical prompt and dynamical trap model

open access: yes, 2002
The present paper proposes a novel interpretation of the widely scattered states (called synchronized traffic) stimulated by Kerner's hypotheses about the existence of a multitude of metastable states in the fundamental diagram. Using single vehicle data

Public Perceptions of the Midwest\u27s Pavements: Explaining the Relationship Between Pavement Quality and Driver Satisfaction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
A three-phase study involving focus groups and sample surveys was conducted in three Midwestern states to assess the amount of satisfaction that motorists who drive on rural, two-lane state highways have with the pavement characteristics of those ...

Effect of on- and off-ramps in cellular automata models for traffic flow

open access: yes, 2000
We present results on the modeling of on- and off-ramps in cellular automata for traffic flow, especially the Nagel-Schreckenberg model. We study two different types of on-ramps that cause qualitatively the same effects.

Congestive Traffic Failure: The Case for High-Occupancy and Express Toll Lanes in Canadian Cities [PDF]

open access: yes
Congestion on Canadian highways is having a significant negative economic impact on major Canadian cities. Rather than face the political challenge of introducing road tolls to discourage traffic, governments have chosen to build carpool lanes on urban ...
