Optimal multi-level thresholding using a two-stage Otsu optimization approach

Pattern Recognition Letters, 2009
Otsu's method of image segmentation selects an optimum threshold by maximizing the between-class variance in a gray image. However, this method becomes very time-consuming when extended to a multi-level threshold problem due to the fact that a large number of iterations are required for computing the cumulative probability and the mean of a class.

A two-stage approach for VMAT treatment plan optimization

2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE), 2013
In this paper we study the optimization problem for the radiation treatment planning of Volumetric-Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT). Considering dose rate and MLC leafs as decision variables, we formulate the problem as nonlinear integer programming problem, which is very difficult to solve. A two-stage approach is proposed to tackle it, where in the first

Two-stage H ∞ optimization approach to multirate controller design

International Journal of Control, Automation and Systems, 2012
A two-stage H ∞ optimization methodology is presented for designing multirate controllers achieving comparable H ∞ closed-loop performance with that of an optimal fast rate design at a reduced real-time computational load.

A two-stage optimization approach for sulphur emission regulation compliance

Maritime Policy & Management, 2016
ABSTRACTIn this paper, we present a two-stage optimization model for the machinery system selection problem. The objective is to minimize total cost, while aggregated power requirement and emission regulations are constraining the problem. Future fuel prices are considered to be uncertain.

A Two Stage Optimization Approach for Calibrating Water Distribution Systems

Water Distribution Systems Analysis 2010, 2011
BWCN is a competition for calibrating pipe roughness coefficients and demand pattern multipliers of CTown Water Distribution System (WDS) to measured SCADA (hourly tank levels and pump flows) and fire flow test data in a 1-week operation. In a pre-calibration step, quality of the data is assessed, base demands for the fire flow tests are estimated, by ...

Optimal Nursing Home Shift Scheduling: A Two-Stage Stochastic Programming Approach

2020 IEEE 16th International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE), 2020
In this paper, we study a nursing home staff schedule optimization problem under resident demand uncertainty. We formulate a two-stage stochastic binary program accordingly, with objective to minimize the total labor cost (linearly related to work time) incurred by both regular registered nurses (RRNs) and part-time nurses (PTNs).

A two-stage approach for optimizing the robust injection molding parameters

2011 Chinese Control and Decision Conference (CCDC), 2011
In this paper, a two-stage approach is proposed for optimizing the robust injection molding parameters. In the first-stage optimization, the simplex method is used to search for qualified parameters when the starting parameter is disqualified. In the second-stage optimization, forgetting factor recursive least square algorithm is used to build the ...

A Two-stage Approach To Solving Large-scale Optimal Power Flows

IEEE Conference Proceedings Power Industry Computer Applications Conference, 1979. PICA-79., 2005
A two stage optimization algorithm is developed for the solution of the large-scale optimal power flow (OPF) problem. The solution scheme is arrived at by exploiting the structural properties of the OPF problem formulation, including the physical characteristics of its variables.
