A significant two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) was demonstrated, for the first time, in a TiNiPd high-temperature shape memory alloy (SMA) with TWSM strains as high as 2.6%. This TWSME was able to perform mechanical work, with a maximum work output of 0.12 J g−1, well above the levels obtained from conventional SMAs. Microstructural changes obtained

Two-way shape memory effect of TiNiSn alloys developed by martensitic deformation
Two-way shape memory effect of TiNiSn alloys was developed by martensite deformation. With increasing Sn content, two-way shape memory strain increased.

Modelling of the two-way shape memory effect
Philosophical Magazine A, 1992After detailed analyses ofthe microstructural mechanism and training methods ofthe two-way shape memory effect, a further refinement of the transformation kinetic expressions for shape memory alloys (SMAs) is derived. A one-dimensional thermomechanical constitutive model for the two-way effect which undergoes thermoelastic martensitic transformation ...

Two-Way Memory Effect in NiTi Shape Memory Alloys
Advances in Science and Technology, 2008In general, the development mechanisms of TWME have long been understood as the nucleation and growth of preferentially oriented martensite guided by the internal stress. This work extends the study by investigating the effects of martensite deformation, constrained stress and retained martensite via partial reverse transformation through thermal ...

Indentation-induced two-way shape-memory effect in NiTi
The 8th Annual IEEE International Conference on Nano/Micro Engineered and Molecular Systems, 2013The indentation-induced shape-memory behavior in both an aged and a solutionized austenitic nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloy was investigated by Vickers indentation. The depth recovery ratio of the indents as well as the formation of protrusions on the surface after planarization was analyzed after the sample was heated above and cooled below the phase ...

This study aims at understanding the predominant mechanisms responsible for the maximum TWME and SATWME. It was found that partial reverse transformation initiated under constraint condition resulted in the generation of two-step phase transformations.

Abstract The paper presents a macroscopic description for the simulation of the two way shape memory effect (TWSME) of shape memory alloys (SMA), and is an extension of a previous work dealing with the global thermomechanical behavior of SMA. The model is set in the framework of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. Two internal variables are

Two-way shape memory effect in polymer laminates
Materials Letters, 2008Novel polymer laminate exhibiting two-way shape memory effect has been prepared by layer technique with the shape memory polymer and elastic polymer. In this paper, we demonstrate the two-way shape memory behavior, i.e., bending on heating and reverse bending on cooling; describe the preparation procedure; and investigate its two-way shape memory ...

Origin of the two-way memory effect in NiTi shape memory alloys
Scripta Metallurgica et Materialia, 1993It is now well-known that the two-way memory effect (TWME) of shape memory alloys is obtained after a thermomechanical cycling called training. Although this point is well-admitted, many controversies still subsist on the physical origin of this two-memory effect.

Understanding indentation-induced two-way shape memory effect
Journal of Materials Research, 2007Spherical indents in NiTi shape memory alloys can have reversible depth change: deeper depth in the martensitic phase at low temperature and shallower depth in the austenitic phase at high temperature. This is the indentation-induced two-way shape memory effect.
