Fracture of U-notched specimens under mixed mode: Experimental results and numerical predictions

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2009
The first part of the paper gives an account of 153 fracture tests on blunted notched specimens (with notches of root radius ranging from 0.3 to 4.0 mm), loaded under mixed mode (ranging from almost pure mode I to mode II, and beyond). Maximum loads and initial crack angles were measured as a function of notch root radius and loading mixity.

Pure shear fracture study in a brittle graphite material containing a U-notch

International Journal of Damage Mechanics, 2013
A disc-type specimen containing a central bean-shaped slit, called the U-notched Brazilian disc specimen, was utilized to measure experimentally the mode II notch fracture toughness of a type of commercial polycrystalline graphite. First, 24 U-notched Brazilian disc graphite specimens were fabricated for four different notch tip radii, and the ...

A criterion for brittle fracture in U-notched components under mixed mode loading

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2009
Abstract A failure criterion is proposed for brittle fracture in U-notched components under mixed-mode static loading. The criterion, called UMTS, is developed based on the maximum tangential stress criterion and also a criterion proposed in the past for mode I failure of rounded V-shaped notches [Gomez FJ, Elices M.

The influence of dielectric constant on bandwidth of U-notch microstrip patch antenna

2010 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband, 2010
A rectangle patch antenna with U-notch is a practical method to improve the bandwidth of microstrip antennas bandwidth. If special material substrate and add matching network are combined, which not only reduce the quality factor of antenna, but also produce maximum output power for little reflection of load.

Effect of hydrogen on four-point bend tests of U-notched AISI 1090 steel

Metallurgical Transactions A, 1987
U-notched, four-point bend tests of 1090 steel were performed in the, presence or absence of precharged hydrogen. Failure occurred in a mode II manner under mixed mode I–II loading, with cracking preceded by plastic instability in the form of surface rumpling and shear localization.

Understanding the Deformation Micro-mechanism in Ti–6Al–4V Alloy U-Notched Specimen

2020
High strength-to-low weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties make the Ti–6Al–4V alloy a favorable material for aerospace application. In this study, digital image correlation (DIC) techniques together with the electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) were employed to understand the deformation micro-mechanism. A uniaxial

Effects of U-notches on the dynamic fracture and fragmentation of explosively driven cylinders

Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, 2015
Abstract Metal cylinder specimens are explosively expanded to fragmentation and the effect of U-notches in walls are investigated on fragmentation behaviors and failure mechanisms of the cylinders experimentally and numerically. Fragments were recovered by sawdust and sorted into four categories according to fragment morphology and fracture mode. The

EXPERIMENTAL FAILURE ANALYSIS OF WET-PATCH-REPAIRED U NOTCHED COMPOSITE PLATES

2016
wet patch, were investigated experimental studies. The failure loads were determined with static tensile test. The fiber orientation angle of composite plates was used as 0o, 15o, 30oand 45oand the fiber orientation angle of patch was used as 0o. The patch thickness effect on the failure loads were investigated for using 2, 3 and 4 layers.

Effect of U-Notch Depth on Impact Resistance under Simple Beam Loading

1962
This study was made in an attempt to establish impact values for Mesnager and DVM notched specimens which would correspond to the 15 ft-lb American Charpy-U acceptance value. Two 12 in. thick plate materials, carbon steel (A 201) and 3.5 per cent nickel steel (A 203 grade D) were investigated.
