Understanding the failure of epoxy resin U-notched samples using cohesive models

The critical distances theory for predicting failure loads of notched solid polymers requires assuming very high values of the characteristic stress. These values have to be much higher than the nominal tensile strength without a reasonable explanation.

THERMO-AGING EFFECT ON THE BUCKLING BEHAVIORS OF U-NOTCHED COMPOSITES

In this study, thermo-aging effect on the U-notched composite plates were investigated experimentally. The temperature, time and notch geometry variations were analyzed. The eight layered woven glass fiber reinforced epoxy matrix resin composite plates were subjected to different temperatures and different time intervals.

This study was made in an attempt to establish impact values for Mesnager and DVM notched specimens which would correspond to the 15 ft-lb American Charpy-U acceptance value. Two 12 in. thick plate materials, carbon steel (A 201) and 3.5 per cent nickel steel (A 203 grade D) were investigated.
