150여 년 전 서구사회에 자포니슴을 불러일으킨 우키요에(浮世絵)는 정작 일본에서 평가를 받지 못했다. 21세기 들어서 우키요에는 대중적 인기와 더불어 정부 차원에서도 일본을 대표하는 문화 자원이 되었다. 우키요에에 대한 서구의 평가와 일본에서의 인기 사이에는 큰 시간적 차이가 있다. 이 논문은 서구의 평가가 아니라 일본 내의 변화에 주목하여, 우키요에에 대한 일본 사회의 평가와 인식 변화가 어떻게, 왜 이루어졌는지를 추적하였다.
