Proximate and ultimate causes of ritual behavior
Behavioural Brain Research, 2020Ritual behaviour, intended as a specific, repetitive and rigid form of action flow, appears both in social and non-social environmental contexts, representing an ubiquitous phenomenon in animal life including human individuals and cultures. The purpose of this contribution is to investigate an evolutionary continuum in proximate and ultimate causes of ...

Human sickness behavior: Ultimate and proximate explanations
American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 2015ABSTRACTSickness behavior, a coordinated set of behavioral changes in response to infection, lies at the intersection of immunology, endocrinology, and evolutionary biology. Sickness behavior is elicited by pro‐inflammatory cytokines, is thought to be an adaptive means of redirecting energy away from disadvantageous behaviors and toward mounting an ...

Ultimate behavior and ultimate load capacity of steel cable-stayed bridges
Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 2007The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the ultimate behavior of steel cable-stayed bridges with design variables and compare the validity and applicability of computational methods for evaluating ultimate load capacity of cable-stayed bridges.

Effect of Bolt Slippage on Ultimate Behavior of Lattice Structures
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1994This paper investigates theoretically the effect of bolt slippage on the deflection and ultimate‐strength responses of lattice structures. For the purpose of this study, two idealized bolt‐slippage models are presented. The effect of bolt slippage was incorporated into the previously developed nonlinear finite element computer program, AK TOWER, by Al ...

Ultimate Load Behavior of Beams With Initial Imperfections
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1985More exact expressions of the fundamental equations of a member with initial imperfections subjected to the action of bending and torsional moments are derived. Since beam problems involve moderately large in‐plane deformation prior to collapse, only nonlinear terms of in‐plane displacement and in‐plane resulting force are considered in the numerical ...

Ultimate Load Behavior of Curved I-Beams
Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1981A method of analyzing the large-deflection behavior of the horizontally curved I-beam, in both elastic and inelastic regions, by using the transfer matrix method is presented. Three kinds of separate loading (e.g., equal end moments, a concentrated load at the midspan, and uniformly distributed load) are considered for this analysis.

Ultimate tensile behavior of linear polyethylene solids
Journal of Polymer Science Part B: Polymer Physics, 2002AbstractThe influence of the elongation rate and temperature on the ultimate tensile properties of melt‐crystallized linear polyethylene solids was investigated, with a double‐edge‐notched specimen to avoid necking, in which uniform deformation could be assumed throughout the experiment.

Ultimate behavior of steel cable-stayed bridges - I. Rational ultimate analysis method -
International Journal of Steel Structures, 2016This paper presents an investigation on the ultimate behavior of steel cable-stayed bridges. In general, various nonlinear factors affect the global behavior of cable-stayed bridges, such as material nonlinearities, cable-sag effect, beam-column effect, large displacement effect, and girder-mast-cable interaction. These effects also affect the ultimate

Waffle Slab Concrete Bridges: Ultimate Behavior
Journal of the Structural Division, 1982The structural response of reinforced and prestressed concrete waffle slab bridges has been examined under working loads as well as under ultimate collapse loads. Bridges of rectangular and skew planforms are studied. The elastic analysis is based on a Fourier series solution, while the ultimate load analysis is formulated using yield-line theory.

Ultimate shear resistance and post-ultimate behavior of double-corrugated-plate shear walls
Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 2020ABSTRACT The double-corrugated-plate shear wall (DCPSW) is composed of two identical corrugated plates that are assembled using connecting bolts. The DCPSW can exhibit much greater shear resistance than the ordinary steel corrugated plate shear wall (SCPSW) since the former forms a series of closed-sections while the latter is with open sections.
