Effect of WC addition on the mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of ZrB2/SiC‐based UHTCMCs

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology, Volume 22, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
Abstract The sintering behavior, mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance of carbon fiber reinforced ZrB2/SiC/WC composites were investigated. Sintering was carried out between 1800 and 2000°C via hot pressing at 40 MPa. WC was completely consumed in the process, and the resulting microstructure was characterized by the formation of Zr1−xWxC ...

Combustion synthesis of ultra‐high temperature ceramics: Review

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology, Volume 22, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
Abstract Novel and future‐oriented aerospace, energy, transportation, and other industrial technologies require materials capable of operating at temperatures above 2000°C. Ultra‐high temperature ceramic materials (UHTCs), based on carbides, borides, carbonitrides, and nitrides of transition metals—many with melting points exceeding 3000°C—possess the ...

Brazing ZrB2 ultra‐high‐temperature ceramics to Zr metals for hypersonic thermal protection systems

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology, Volume 22, Issue 5, September/October 2025.
Abstract Porous and dense zirconium diboride (ZrB2) materials are promising ultra‐high‐temperature ceramics (UHTCs) for transpiration cooling in hypersonic applications, providing an effective means to reduce component temperatures and mitigate oxidation effects. While porous ZrB2 enables coolant flow, dense ZrB2 offers structural integrity.

Synthesis of hafnium carbide (HfC) via one‐step selective laser reaction pyrolysis from liquid polymer precursor

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 108, Issue 9, September 2025.
➢ A one‐step selective laser reaction pyrolysis (SLRP) technique was developed to rapidly synthesize hafnium carbide (HfC) from liquid polymer precursors. ➢ XRD and TEM confirmed the nanocrystalline structure of the HfC. ➢ The SLRP‐based process achieved up to 54% ceramic yield, 18% higher than furnace‐based methods.

Twin Toughening‐Driven Martensitic Transformation Strategy Synergistic Improvement for Plasticity‐Thermal Shock Resistance of (Hf─Zr─Ti)C Ceramic Coating in Severe Thermal Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 26, July 10, 2025.
A “ceramic self‐toughening strategy” is introduced for enhancing the plasticity and thermal shock resistance of (Hf─Zr─Ti)C coatings through twin toughening‐driven martensitic transformations in oxide scales. It facilitated the formation of stable, dense, and high‐toughness oxide scales after repeat ablation, and endowed prepared coatings with superior

Mechanistic insights into high strain rate deposition of tantalum carbide coatings via cold spray

open access: yesMaterials & Design
While cold spray (CS) is traditionally limited to metals and metal-ceramic composites, this study demonstrates its capability to consolidate a pure ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC), tantalum carbide (TaC), a superhard material considered highly ...

Near-net shape fabrication process of ZrB2-SiC ceramics using highly concentrated ZrB2 slurries and a precursor impregnation & pyrolysis process

open access: yesMaterials & Design
Near-net-shape fabrication of ZrB2–SiC ultra-high-temperature ceramics (UHTCs) remains challenging due to shrinkage and deformation during drying and densification, which compromise dimensional accuracy and densification reliability.
