Three-dimensional ultrastructure of capillary endothelial glycocalyx under normal and experimental endotoxemic conditions

open access: yesCritical Care, 2017
BackgroundSugar-protein glycocalyx coats healthy endothelium, but its ultrastructure is not well described. Our aim was to determine the three-dimensional ultrastructure of capillary endothelial glycocalyx in the heart, kidney, and liver, where ...

Deletion of Type 3 Adenylyl Cyclase Perturbs the Postnatal Maturation of Olfactory Sensory Neurons and Olfactory Cilium Ultrastructure in Mice

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2017
Type 3 adenylyl cyclase (Adcy3) is localized to the cilia of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) and is an essential component of the olfactory cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling pathway.

Nanobody immunostaining for correlated light and electron microscopy with preservation of ultrastructure

open access: yesNature Methods, 2018
Morphological and molecular characteristics determine the function of biological tissues. Attempts to combine immunofluorescence and electron microscopy invariably compromise the quality of the ultrastructure of tissue sections.

Endocytosis and Digestion in Carnivorous Pitcher Plants of the Family Sarraceniaceae

open access: yesPlants, 2019
Highly evolved carnivorous plants secrete digestive enzymes for degradation of trapped animals and absorb whole macromolecules from their prey by means of endocytosis.

ULTRASTRUCTURE OF THE ACTIN CYTOSKELETON

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Cell Biology, 2018
The actin cytoskeleton is the primary force-generating machinery in the cell, which can produce pushing (protrusive) forces using energy of actin polymerization and pulling (contractile) forces via sliding of bipolar filaments of myosin II along actin ...

Elastic Fiber Ultrastructure and Assembly

open access: yesMatrix Biology, 2019
Studies over the years have described a filamentous structure to mature elastin that suggests a complicated packing arrangement of tropoelastin subunits.

Evaluation of metal contamination effects in piranhas through biomonitoring and multi biomarkers approach

open access: yesHeliyon, 2020
The present field study aimed to assess the water quality of the Itacaiúnas River, located at the eastern part of the Brazilian Amazon, using water's physicochemical parameters, ecological risk assessment in sediments, biomarkers and metal ...

Lamina Cell Shape and Cell Wall Thickness Are Useful Indicators for Metal Tolerance—An Example in Bryophytes

open access: yesPlants, 2021
Bryophytes are widely used to monitor air quality. Due to the lack of a cuticle, their cells can be compared to the roots of crop plants. This study aimed to test a hypothetical relation between metal tolerance and cell shape in biomonitoring mosses ...

Ultrastructure of osteoblastoma [PDF]

open access: yesCancer, 1977
The ultrastructure of three cases of osteoblastoma is described. The osteoblasts resemble normal osteoblasts with a few exceptions: irregular, indented nuclei, and occasional mitochondria with curved cristae and electron-lucent areas. The osteocytes and osteoclasts basically resemble their normal counterparts.

Variation in human hair ultrastructure among three biogeographic populations.

open access: yesJournal of Structural Biology, 2019
Human scalp hairs are often examined microscopically to study the variation and diversity among a range of visible morphological traits. In this study, we focused on the ultrastructure of human scalp hair within its keratinized matrix, emphasizing, the ...
