Metformin enhances external urethral sphincter integrity and restores continence via AMPK activation in a rat model of stress urinary incontinence

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
The pathogenesis of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is intimately associated with injury to the external urethral sphincter (EUS). In this study, we established an SUI model induced by double vaginal distension and demonstrated that metformin treatment activated the AMPK signaling in the EUS tissue.

Ultrastructure of adhesion and movement of the tetraspores of Gelidium Lamour (Geldiaceae; Rhodophyta) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The outer part of the tetraspora cell wall in Gelidium crinale (Turner) J.V. Lamour. and G. spathulatum (Kutz.) Bornet is morphologically described in relation to the movements and displacement of these spores when they settle on a substratum.

Astrocytic Mitochondria Transplantation Rescues Neuron Loss and Dendritic Injuries in Acute Cerebral Ischemic Stroke Mouse Model by Flexibly Regulating Mitochondria Dynamics

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective Cerebral ischemic stroke causes neuronal oxygen/energy deprivation, disrupting mitochondrial function including reduced membrane potential and bioenergetics, exacerbating neuronal injury. Mitochondrial defects are, therefore, a central neuropathological node and potential therapeutic target.

Antiprotozoal activity of flavonoids from Eupatorium arnottianum [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Dichloromethane and ethanol extracts of Eupatorium arnottianum were evaluated for invitroleishmanicidal activity. The dichloromethane extract produced 80% and 85% of growthinhibition on both Leishmania mexicana and Leishmania amazonensis promastigotes ...

Morphometric analysis of postnatal lung development in the gray short‐tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica): An ultrastructural study

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract An ultrastructural morphometric analysis of the postnatal development of the lung in the gray short‐tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) has been conducted to evaluate the morphofunctional status of this poorly developed marsupial lung immediately following parturition.

Zika virus infection induces ultrastructural alterations, mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in human trophoblast HTR-8/SVneo

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
BackgroundZika fever gained importance in Brazil in 2015 due to its association with congenital syndrome. Although Zika virus (ZIKV) crosses the placenta and infects the fetus, its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. This study investigated the

Developmental Characteristics of the Embryonic Liver Tissue and Long‐Term Culture of Primary Hepatocytes in Duck

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Liver development was investigated at different embryonic ages (EAs). Furthermore, numerous hepatocyte media were formulated and evaluated. These results could elaborate the developmental characteristics of duck liver tissue and determine the most suitable medium for the proliferation and characteristic maintenance of hepatocytes in vitro, which would ...

TWEAK/Fn14 Signaling Drives Oxidative Cardiac Injury in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Evidence From Patient Biomarker Studies, Lupus Mouse Models, and Cardiomyocyte Assays

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, EarlyView.
Objective Cardiac involvement is a major cause of morbidity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Tumor necrosis factor–like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) is elevated in SLE, but its contribution to lupus‐associated cardiac injury is unclear. We investigated the role of TWEAK/fibroblast growth factor–inducible 14 (Fn14) signaling in SLE‐related ...
