Ultraviolet and X-Ray Astronomy

2016
This chapter discusses the astrophysics with photons having an energy up to hundreds of keV. X-rays are not able to penetrate atmosphere and space based observatories are needed. Telescopes for UV and softX-rays use reflective elements based on grazing incidence.

THE PENETRATION OF ULTRAVIOLET RAYS INTO ANIMAL TISSUE

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1928
To the Editor: —In a recent paper (The Journal, January 21) Macht, Anderson and Bell publish results of measurements which may lead to a false conception concerning the penetration of ultraviolet rays through animal tissues. Two methods are used for the determination of the transmitted radiation, a photographic method with use of a spectograph and a ...

PRIORITY AS TO THE ACTIVATION OF FOODS BY ULTRAVIOLET RAYS

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1930
ABSTRACT To the Editor: —For some years, in referring to the discovery of the activation of foods by means of ultraviolet rays, I have stated that Hess and Steenbock made this observation "almost simultaneously." It seemed to me, in view of the fact that the discovery was made independently and so nearly at the same time, that this was a liberal way of
