Determination of fiber charge components of Lo-Solids unbleached kraft pulps
Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2004Four different titration methods for measurement of fiber charge were used in this study. Each method gave different fiber charge values depending on the acidity of the end point and the interaction between the fiber chemical components and the titrant.

Partial delignification of unbleached kraft pulp with ligninolytic fungi
Biotechnology Letters, 1979Unbleached kraft pulp is partially delignified on incubation under specified conditions with ligninolytic fungi, thereby decreasing requirements for bleaching chemicals. Studies withPhanerochaete chrysosporium demonstrated important effects of nutrient nitrogen and molecular oxygen concentrations. Possible approaches to rate enhancement are suggested.

Surface Characterization of Unbleached Kraft Pulps by Enzymatic Peeling and ESCA
hfsg, 1996Specific enzymes hydrolyzing pulp carbohydrates can be used for characterization of pulp fibres. By combining enzymatic peeling of fibre hemicelluloses with novel techniques of surface analysis, such as ESCA, new information can be obtained on the location of different components, i.e. xylan, glucomannan and lignin on the fibre surfaces.

UASB performance for bleached and unbleached kraft pulp synthetic wastewater treatment
Chemosphere, 2005This paper presents the performance of two bench scale Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactors (UASB) used for the treatment of synthetic substrates that simulate bleached and unbleached cellulose pulp plant wastewaters. The control reactor was fed with diluted black liquor and the treatment reactor with the same substrate plus a mixture of ...

Wet strength improvement of unbleached kraft pulp through laccase catalyzed oxidation
Enzyme and Microbial Technology, 2001Previous investigations have shown that laccase catalyzed oxidation of lignin containing wood fibers can enhance the strength of medium density fiberboards. In the present work it was investigated if laccase treatment had any impact on the tensile strength of a high yield unbleached kraft pulp. Treatment with laccase alone had only a very little effect

High Temperature Leaching of Lignin From Unbleached Kraft Pulp Fibers
Journal of Wood Chemistry and Technology, 1983Abstract When an unbleached kraft pulp was suspended in water at various temperatures between 20°C and 90°C the rate of the leaching of lignin from the fiber wall increased with the temperature. From 20°C to 70°C, the change in the intrafiber diffusion coefficient with temperature varied directly as the ratio of the absolute temperature to the ...

Delignification of an unbleached hardwood kraft pulp by Phanerochaete chrysosporium
Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 1987Culture conditions affecting lignin degradation of an unbleached hardwood kraft pulp by Phanerochaete chrysosporium have been examined. Optimum pH and temperature for lignin degradation (about 33%) were 3.5 and 38°C, respectively. Optimum fungal growth was at a pH of 4.5 and a temperature of around 32°C.

Sulfur makeup in an unbleached kraft pulp mill
TAPPI JournalSodium sesquisulfate or “sesqui” (Na3H(SO4)2) is a by-product of chlorine dioxide production at kraft pulp mills. It is typically used for sodium and sulfur makeup in the liquor loop. Mondi Hinton Inc. (MHI) in Hinton, AB, Canada, was converting from bleached to unbleached kraft pulp production and was thus losing this source of makeup. The only option

Surface Characterization of Unbleached and Oxygen Delignified Kraft Pulp Fibers
Journal of Wood Chemistry and Technology, 2003The chemical and morphological surface properties of different unbleached and oxygen delignified softwood kraft pulp fibers were evaluated by using different ESCA and SEM techniques. The results of the different techniques have revealed that the surface of unbleached and oxygen delignified kraft pulp fibers has a higher content of lignin and in some ...

Use of Xylanase and Rabinofuranosidase for Arabinose Removal from Unbleached Kraft Pulp
Biotechnology Letters, 2005Preparations of arabinofuranosidase and xylanase, respectively from Aureobasidium pullulans and Trichoderma longibrachiatum, were used to remove selectively xylose and arabinose from kraft pulp. The equilibrium moisture content of pulps treated with both enzymes, at varying relative humidities, revealed a consistently lower percent moisture content at ...
