In-situ Unburned Gas Temperature Measurement in a Spark Ignition Engine Using Laser Interferometry
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2005<div class="htmlview paragraph">A heterodyne interferometry system with a fiber-optic sensor was developed to measure the temperature history of unburned gas in a spark-ignition engine. A polarization-preserving fiber and metal mirror were used as the fiber-optic sensor to deliver the test beam to and from the measurement region. This fiber-optic

A fibre-optic heterodyne interferometry system was developed to obtain the temperature histories of an unburned mixture with high temporal resolution non-intrusively. In laser interferometry, the effective optical path length of the test beam changes with the gas density and corresponding changes of the refractive index.

Unburned gas temperature measurements in a surrogate Diesel jet via two-color toluene-LIF imaging
Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, 2011Abstract Non-intrusive temperature measurements of the unburned fuel/air mixture in vaporized Diesel jets have been performed using two-color toluene laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). This diagnostics technique exploits the temperature-dependent spectral shift of the LIF signal which occurs after ultraviolet (UV) excitation of toluene that is added ...

It is very important to know the temperature history in a spark-ignition engine when the phenomenon of knocking is being studied. However, measurement of the gas temperature is not easy and some work has been done using laser diagnostics etc. In this study, the temperature history until the time of occurrence of knocking in a spark-ignition engine was ...

The intrinsic instability of three-dimensional (3D) premixed flames under low- and high-temperature conditions was numerically treated to study the effects of unburned-gas temperature on hydrodynamic and diffusive-thermal instabilities. Superimposing a sinusoidal disturbance with sufficiently small amplitude on a planar flame, we obtained the relation ...

Abstract Spark assisted compression ignition (SACI) combustion is a potential means of extending the high load limit of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) while maintaining high thermal efficiency. In these experiments, an HCCI engine equipped with fully-flexible valve actuation was used to explore the effect of spark assist in ...
