Capture, Propagate, and Control Distributional Uncertainty

open access: yes2023 62nd IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC), 2023
We study stochastic dynamical systems in settings where only partial statistical information about the noise is available, e.g., in the form of a limited number of noise realizations. Such systems are particularly challenging to analyze and control, primarily due to an absence of a distributional uncertainty model which: (1) is expressive enough to ...

Configuration Stability Analysis for Geocentric Space Gravitational-Wave Observatories

open access: yesAerospace, 2022
Long-term configuration stability is essential for a space-based gravitational-wave observatory, which can be affected by orbit insertion errors. This paper investigated the stability of a geocentric gravitational-wave observatory from the view of the ...

Bank liquidity and the propagation of uncertainty in the U.S.

open access: yesFinance Research Letters, 2022
Does the banking sector matter for the propagation of uncertainty? We apply local projections to study the dynamic response of U.S. real GDP to exogenous changes in uncertainty conditional on the liquidity of the banking sector. We find that uncertainty has a stronger impact when the banking sector is less liquid.

Avaliação das incertezas associadas à determinação do parâmetro de solubilidade de Hildebrand de petróleos

open access: yesQuímica Nova, 2011
Asphaltenes are fractions of crude oils that can precipitate and one of the parameters used in the prediction of the conditions in which this phenomenon occurs is the Hildebrand solubility parameter.

An analytical model to quantify the impact of the propagation of uncertainty in knee joint angle computation

open access: yesInternational Biomechanics, 2022
Joint kinematics are typically described using Cardan angles or the attitude vector and its projection on the joint axes. Whichever the notation used, the uncertainties present in gait measurements affect the computed kinematics, especially for the knee ...

Error Estimation for the Linearized Auto-Localization Algorithm

open access: yesSensors, 2012
The Linearized Auto-Localization (LAL) algorithm estimates the position of beacon nodes in Local Positioning Systems (LPSs), using only the distance measurements to a mobile node whose position is also unknown.

A review of uncertainty quantification and its applications in numerical simulation of scramjet combustor

open access: yesInternational Journal of Thermofluids, 2023
Engine design heavily relies on numerical simulation of engine environments, which greatly accelerates the design iteration and increases efficiency. Nonetheless, for a long time, the uncertainty associated with numerical modeling has been overlooked due

Uncertainty propagation in nuclear forensics

open access: yesApplied Radiation and Isotopes, 2014
Uncertainty propagation formulae are presented for age dating in support of nuclear forensics. The age of radioactive material in this context refers to the time elapsed since a particular radionuclide was chemically separated from its decay product(s).

Modeling Land Surface Fluxes from Uncertain Rainfall: A Case Study in the Sahel with Field-Driven Stochastic Rainfields

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2020
In distributed land surface modeling (LSM) studies, uncertainty in the rainfields that are used to force models is a major source of error in predicted land surface response variables.

Determination of the Variance of Complex Calculated Clinical Chemistry Tests; Application in Calculated Low Density Lipoprotein and Atherogenic Index of Plasma [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2020
Introduction: Measurement uncertainty is the random error component of the measurement and is an interval around the measured value, into which the true value lies with some probability.
