Global estimates on the number of people blind or visually impaired by Uncorrected Refractive Error: a meta-analysis from 2000 to 2020

open access: yesEye
Uncorrected refractive error (URE) is a readily treatable cause of visual impairment (VI). This study provides updated estimates of global and regional vision loss due to URE, presenting temporal change for VISION 2020 Data from population-based eye ...

Understanding higher‐order aberrations in keratoconus

open access: yesOptometry and Vision Science, Volume 103, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Keratoconus is characterized by progressive thinning and increasing irregularity of the cornea, leading to substantial degradation in optical quality through the induction of both lower‐ and higher‐order aberrations (HOAs). In addition to inducing myopic and astigmatic refractive error, asymmetric corneal steepening generates complex optical ...

The uncorrected refractive error challenge

open access: yes, 2016
Refractive error affects people of all ages, socio-economic status and ethnic groups. The most recent statistics estimate that, worldwide, 32.4 million people are blind and 191 million people have vision impairment.

Visual outcome after monocular implantation of extended depth of focus intraocular lens in a patient with iridodialysis: a case report and literature review

open access: yesJournal of Medical Case Reports
Background Iridodialysis, the separation of the iris root from the ciliary body, typically results from trauma and can lead to significant visual impairment. This case report is novel as it demonstrates the successful management of iridodialysis using an

Motor Cortex Hyperexcitability Is Coupled to Neuromuscular Dysfunction in Aged Mice

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 10, October 2026.
Aged mice exhibited impaired motor behavior and neuromuscular hypoexcitability, yet cortical output to muscle was enhanced, and motor cortex layer V pyramidal neurons were hyperexcitable, with altered synaptic inputs and excitability‐related transcriptional changes.

Underground allies: Mycorrhizal flexibility facilitates orchid occurrence in post‐mining landscapes

open access: yesPlant Biology, Volume 28, Issue 6, Page 1899-1911, October 2026.
Epipactis helleborine associates with largely habitat‐specific fungal communities, with limited overlap between mining and woodland sites, yet maintains comparable genetic diversity across habitats. These results highlight the role of mycorrhizal flexibility in enabling habitat shifts and expanding ecological niches in human‐altered landscapes ...

Chaotropic Surface Arginine Correlates With Protein Corona Formation on Anti‐Fouling Biomaterial Surfaces: A Quantitative Proteomics and Protein Structure Study

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 13, Issue 17, 8 September 2026.
Why do specific proteins accumulate on “non‐fouling” surfaces? Quantitative proteomics and structural analysis reveal surface‐exposed arginine as the key molecular determinant. ABSTRACT The protein corona determines the biocompatibility of medical devices, yet predicting its composition on anti‐fouling surfaces remains challenging.

Personalized Network‐Guided Neuromodulation Enhances Human Working Memory

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 49, 3 September 2026.
A personalized neuromodulation framework combining individualized functional brain network targeting with real‐time neural decoding is introduced. Using concurrent TMS–fMRI, participant‐specific stimulation targets and optimal frequencies are identified. Only optimal‐frequency stimulation improves working memory across sessions.
