Elevated CO2 advances vegetation phenology

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 9, Page 2946-2958, September 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog.PLS URL: https://fesummaries.wordpress.com/2026/06/26/elevated‐co2‐advances‐vegetation‐phenology/ Abstract The continuous rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration has profoundly altered vegetation structure and function across terrestrial ecosystems.

Temperate forest heterogeneity decreases local and landscape‐scale spider diversity through habitat filtering despite increasing species turnover

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 95, Issue 9, Page 1793-1806, September 2026.
In a large‐scale German forest experiment, habitat heterogeneity increased spider turnover but reduced local alpha diversity through habitat filtering. Together, these effects lowered landscape‐scale spider diversity. As such, the study shows whether environmental heterogeneity increases or decreases biodiversity depends on the balance between habitat ...

A case study on the early stage of Pinus nigra invasion and its impact on species composition and pattern in Pannonic sand grassland

open access: yesScientific Reports
Alien woody species are successful invaders, frequently used for afforestation in regions like semi-arid lands. Shrubs and trees create important microhabitats in arid areas.

Shifting mechanisms of biotic resistance following invasion control: Consumers, competition and legacy effects

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 9, September 2026.
Post‐control areas are less vulnerable to reinvasion when vegetation structure and consumer communities are maintained. Managers should prioritise preventing establishment in uninvaded grasslands, while using grazing and retaining woody debris to strengthen natural biotic resistance and improve long‐term, cost‐effective invasive conifer control ...

Dominance of Picea glehnii in the Serpentine Forests of Hokkaido: Perspectives for an Ecological Understanding

open access: yesEcological Research, Volume 41, Issue 5, September 2026.
We question why Picea glehnii dominates serpentine forests in Hokkaido. First, based on functional trait measurements and a comparison with another coniferous species present in the region, Abies sachalinensis, we report preliminary results consistent with better adaptation of P. glehnii to serpentine soils.

Conspecific Negative Distance‐Dependence and New Zealand Podocarp Forest Dynamics

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 51, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT The Janzen‐Connell hypothesis proposed that conspecific negative density or distance dependence (CNDDD) helps maintain the species richness of tropical rainforests through the action of specialist natural enemies that suppress conspecific recruitment beneath canopy trees.

Effects of Understorey Intercropping and Planting Density on Growth, Physiology, and Pharmaceutical Quality of Pogostemon cablin

open access: yesGuangdong nongye kexue
【Objective】To study the effects of understorey intercropping and different planting densities on patchouli growth, physiological traits and herb quality, and to provide a theoretical basis for optimising ecological planting of patchouli.【Method】In this ...

Understorey fine root mass and morphology in the litter and upper soil layers of three Chinese subtropical forests

open access: yes, 2016
To quantitatively assess how fine root biomass and necromass of understorey species vary in the litter and upper mineral soil layers. The method combines in situ sampling of the litter layer with sequential coring during the root growth stage in three ...

Using Expert Knowledge to Guide Transparent Mapping of Occupiable Threatened Species Habitat for Environmental Impact Assessment Purposes

open access: yesEcological Management &Restoration, Volume 27, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Consistent definition of environmental parameters to define occupiable threatened species habitat is important for quantifying the potential impact footprint as part of environmental impact assessments. Presently, occupiable habitats are often mapped based on subjective and varied understanding of what likely habitat is, leading to ...

Assessing the Distribution, Density and Ecological Impacts of Feral Deer in Urban and Peri‐Urban Areas of Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia

open access: yesEcological Management &Restoration, Volume 27, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Feral deer are associated with a range of environmental impacts including overgrazing and trampling of native vegetation, increased insolation, ringbarking, creation of wallows, erosion and stream degradation. Consequences of invasive deer impacts can threaten vulnerable ecological communities and have the potential to alter long‐term ...
