Mediterranean coastal pine forest stands: Understorey distinctiveness or not?
Abstract A common perception of plantation forests is that they constitute an “ecological desert” and that is why they are often disdained by scholars. Distribution patterns of understorey assemblages of coastal pine stands on sand dunes are still little known, despite such forests being widespread along the Mediterranean coastline, particularly in ...

Gentry and Peltastes peltatus (Vell.) Woodson,

In wild bird populations, the structure of vegetation around nest‐sites can influence the risk of predation of dependent offspring, generating selection for nest‐sites with vegetation characteristics associated with lower predation rates.

What drives animal responses to high severity fire? The role of functional traits
ABSTRACT Fire regimes are changing worldwide, with increases in the frequency, extent, and severity of fires posing growing risks to biodiversity. Fire severity – the degree of habitat alteration following fire – strongly influences both immediate survival and long‐term recovery of fauna.

Understorey–canopy affinities in boreal forest vegetation
One hundred and ninety-seven boreal forest stands, in a region of Ontario and Quebec south of James Bay, were examined. Tree species were summarized as relative density of each of five stem size classes. These data formed the basis for an exclusive polythetic divisive stand classification into 10 groups.

Temperature generally drives latitudinal patterns in the strength of trophic interactions, including consumption rates. However, local community and other environmental conditions might also affect consumption, disrupting latitudinal gradients, which results in complex large‐scale patterns.

The presence of invasive plants in a habitat will cause significant disturbances, especially in decreasing the abundance of biodiversity. The high competitiveness of invasive species causes native species to lose in competition.
