Signal processing for underwater acoustic communications

IEEE Communications Magazine, 2009
The performance and complexity of signal processing systems for underwater acoustic communications has dramatically increased over the last two decades. With its origins in noncoherent modulation and detection for communication at rates under 100 b/s, phase-coherent digital communication systems employing multichannel adaptive equalization with ...

Synchronization techniques for underwater acoustic communications

International Journal of Communication Systems, 2023
SummaryUnderwater acoustic channel is a challenging medium for communication due to the presence of significant multipath, high noise, frequency‐dependent propagation loss, and high and non‐uniform Doppler spread. Doppler shift is non‐negligible in underwater communication due to the low velocity of underwater signals.

OFDMA for underwater acoustic communications

2011 49th Annual Allerton Conference on Communication, Control, and Computing (Allerton), 2011
We investigate the possibility of using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) for design of efficient underwater acoustic (UWA) networks. The major challenge for the OFDMA-based UWA communication systems is the Doppler-induced frequency scaling, which may cause severe intercarrier interference (ICI), and depending on the particular user

Underwater acoustic communications

Proceedings of OCEANS '93, 2002
The paper first attempts to provide a framework for the underwater acoustic communication system. An acoustic frequency band allocation, analogous to that used by radio engineers, is proposed. Similarly, the "shallow" channel is defined and the conditions pertaining to "high" bit rate explored.
