Acoustic-inertial underwater navigation

2017 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), 2017
In this paper, we introduce a novel acoustic-inertial navigation system (AINS) for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). We are aiming to reduce the cost and latency of current underwater navigation systems that typically employ high-accuracy and thus high-cost inertial sensors.

Underwater Acoustic Channels Characterization for Underwater Cognitive Acoustic Networks

2018 International Conference on Intelligent Transportation, Big Data & Smart City (ICITBS), 2018
This paper focuses on characterizing underwater acoustic (UWA) channels in the view of underwater cognitive acoustic networks. In the most recent years, underwater cognitive acoustic networks have attracted much attention in pace with that “digital ocean” is developing to “smart ocean”.

OFDMA for underwater acoustic communications

2011 49th Annual Allerton Conference on Communication, Control, and Computing (Allerton), 2011
We investigate the possibility of using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) for design of efficient underwater acoustic (UWA) networks. The major challenge for the OFDMA-based UWA communication systems is the Doppler-induced frequency scaling, which may cause severe intercarrier interference (ICI), and depending on the particular user

Underwater acoustics and acoustical oceanography

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011
Though underwater acoustics (UW) and acoustical oceanography (AO) have different goals, their overlap often makes efforts in these areas indistinguishable. In this talk I emphasize their similarities while also discussing their different approaches.

Directional acoustic underwater thruster

IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control, 2011
This study describes a tested prototype for a controllable directional underwater thruster with no moving parts. During operation, a high-intensity acoustic wave creates directional water jets and the device moves itself in the opposite direction. When the underwater thruster moves along a non-vertical angle, it can produce straight backward thrust of ...

Blending underwater acoustics and acoustical oceanography

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2007
Acoustical oceanography, which is the use of sound to probe ocean processes, had been in practice for many years before Hank Medwin spearheaded the creation of the ASA Acoustical Oceanography Technical Committee (AOTC). It has blossomed since that time, aided by interactions fostered by AOTC activities.

RAY CHAOS IN UNDERWATER ACOUSTIC WAVEGUIDES

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2008
The chaotic motion of a ray path in a deep water acoustic waveguide with internal-wave-induced fluctuations of the sound speed is investigated. A statistical approach for the description of chaotic rays is discussed. The behavior of ray trajectories is studied using Hamiltonian formalism expressed in terms of action-angle variables.

Bidirectional equalization for underwater acoustic communication

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2012
The bidirectional decision feedback equalizer (BiDFE) that combines the outputs of a conventional decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and backward DFE can improve the performance of the conventional DFE by up to 1–2 dB based on simulations. In this letter, the BiDFE concept is extended to multichannel time reversal communications involving a DFE as a ...
