WaterPairs: a paired dataset for underwater image enhancement and underwater object detection

open access: yesIntelligent Marine Technology and Systems
AbstractDue to its importance in marine engineering and aquatic robotics, underwater image enhancement works as a preprocessing step to improve the performance of high-level vision tasks such as underwater object detection and recognition. Although several studies exhibit that underwater image enhancement algorithms can boost the detection accuracy of ...

Oxygen Supply of Islets of Langerhans by Photosynthetically Active Microalgae in Bioprinted Co‐Cultures Maintains Their Function in a Hypoxic Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed a bioprinted co‐culture system embedding rat pancreatic islets and Scenedesmus sp. microalgae spatially defined in close vicinity. Red light was found optimal to ensure microalgal photosynthesis while maintaining islet viability and functionality. A tailored co‐culture medium supported both cell types.

Modulation Classification of Underwater Communication Signals Based on Channel Estimation

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Classifying modulated signals for non-cooperative underwater acoustic communication is challenging due to signal distortion caused by fading and multipath effects in the underwater acoustic channel.

Controllable Dynamic Mechanical Cell Stimulation using Magnetically Actuated Artificial Cilia

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This paper introduces a platform based on magnetic artificial cilia for providing controllable dynamic mechanical stimulation to single cells, suitable for investigating large cell populations and enabling live cell imaging. Proof‐of‐principle experiments show that cell morphology is strongly influenced by the artificial cilia, that cellular forces can

A Physiological Microfluidic Blood–Brain‐Barrier Model for In Vitro Study of Nanoparticle Trafficking and Accumulation

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A human microfluidic blood‐brain barrier (mBBB) model enables spatially resolved comparison of nanoparticle trafficking. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), liposomes, and nanoplastics exhibit distinct transport and disruption behaviors, revealing that membrane composition and uptake pathways govern BBB interaction.

Tank dataset: An underwater multi-sensor dataset for SLAM evaluation

open access: yesThe International Journal of Robotics Research
Underwater visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is essential for autonomous underwater navigation and close-range underwater inspection. However, the turbid and low-light conditions common underwater severely limit visibility and cause motion blurring, posing significant open challenges for visual SLAM approaches deployed ...

Intelligent Acousto‐Electrical Metamaterials (IAM) for Sound Source Detection

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Our proposed metamaterial concept enables sound source detection using a single material, in contrast to conventional arrays that require dozens or even hundreds of transducers. We show that the coupled acoustic–vibrational–electrical responses in piezoelectric metamaterials give rise to topology‐governed charge transport, producing distinct voltage ...

Underwater object detection and datasets: a survey

open access: yesIntelligent Marine Technology and Systems
AbstractThe rapidly growing exploitation and utilization of marine resources by humans has sparked considerable interest in underwater object detection tasks. Targets captured in underwater environments differ significantly from those captured in general images owing to various factors, such as water turbidity, complex background conditions, and ...
