Sentipensar [Feel‐Thinking] Cultivates Collective Scientific Sensemaking and Worldbuilding Within and Beyond Ecological Despair

open access: yesScience Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Educating youth about environmental and climate justice is crucial in realizing a sustainable and flourishing future. Yet this can be challenging given the intense eco‐emotions youth experience and express while learning about these consequential realities and their implications.

Goffman's Tempting the Devil in Stigma: A Close Rereading of Goffman's “Subversive” Construct of “the Normals” Versus “the Stigmatized”

open access: yesSymbolic Interaction, EarlyView.
This article engages in a close rereading of Stigma, relating it to Goffman's biography as a person who faced stigma. Exploring his biography helps us to recognize the ways Goffman applies stigma strategies in how he represents himself as the author in Stigma.

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Biophysics of underwater hearing in Rana catesbeiana [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1981
A vertical, water-filled steel pipe, 3 m long with 0.63-cm-thick walls and 15-cm internal diameter was used to determine the biophysical basis of underwater hearing sensitivity in Rana catesbeiana. A speaker inside the base produced standing waves. Pressure and particle motion were measured with a hydrophone and geophone, respectively, and were 90° out

GHOSTLY ENCOUNTERS IN LAGOS: Virtual Reality between Urban Marketing and Media Activism

open access: yesInternational Journal of Urban and Regional Research, EarlyView.
Abstract This article examines the role of virtual reality (VR) technologies in mediating and contesting dominant visions of urban futures in West Africa. Drawing on theoretical insights from a hybridization of the work of the German‐born Jewish critic Walter Benjamin and the Nigerian writer Amos Tutuola, I introduce the concept of phantasmagoria as a ...

The influence of variations in background noise on Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) detection of boat noise and vocalizations.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
A manatee's primary modality to detect a vessel on a possible collision course is hearing as underwater visibility is limited in many manatee habitats and their visual acuity is poor.

Sensory Biology of the Franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei, Pontoporiidae, Cetartiodactyla): Ontogenetic Modifications of Vibrissae and Vibrissal Crypts

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
The transition of cetaceans from a terrestrial to an aquatic environment involved a crucial sensory adaptation to environments with limited visibility. Vibrissae, important mechanoreceptors, undergo an ontogenetic transformation in odontocetes. This research describes the histomorphology of vibrissae and crypts at different developmental stages ...

Contrastive ecoacoustic indices: Large‐scale global soundscape characterization with contrastive inference

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Ecoacoustics mainly aims at monitoring soundscapes by means of non‐invasive protocols. Despite the widespread adoption of machine and deep learning techniques, existing ecoacoustic models predominantly rely on supervised learning and, consequently, face two primary limitations: (1) the necessity of annotated data; and (2) the restriction to ...

Changes in Site Occupancy of Marsh‐Breeding Frogs Are Associated With Surrounding Land Cover: Implications for Conservation Planning

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
To help ensure the growth and persistence of frog populations, we quantified changes in frog occurrence as a function of concurrent changes in land cover in the surrounding landscape of eight marsh‐breeding frog species, or groups of species. We used data from the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program delivered by Birds Canada at 377 sites across four ...
