STABILIZATION OF AN UNDERWATER VEHICLE

open access: yesIFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2005
Abstract We present a sliding mode based control law for stabilizing an underactuated underwater vehicle (UUV) moving in a horizontal plane. The novelty of the proposed control law is that we exploit the dynamics of the vehicle to define three sliding surfaces, at whose intersection the system is asymptotically stable.

On Mixed-Initative Planning and Control for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles [PDF]

open access: yes
Supervision and control of Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) has traditionally been focused on an operator determining a priori the sequence of waypoints of a single vehicle for a mission.

A Markov Chain state transition approach to establishing critical phases for AUV reliability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The deployment of complex autonomous underwater platforms for marine science comprises a series of sequential steps. Each step is critical to the success of the mission. In this paper we present a state transition approach, in the form of a Markov chain,

Cteno‐Bot: An Untethered Metachronally Swimming Robot With Magnetoactive Propulsors

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
We present Cteno‐bot, an untethered ctenophore‐inspired robot which swims using metachronally coordinated appendages. A single mechanism controls up to 216 magnetoactive propulsors via a dynamically varying magnetic field. We show that the swimming speed of the robot can be increased without a corresponding increase in power requirement, simply by ...

The Mitigation of Mutual Coupling Effects in Multi-Beam Echosounder Calibration under Near-Field Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
The advancement of unmanned platforms is driving the miniaturization and cost reduction of the multi-beam echosounder (MBES). In the process of MBES array calibration, the mutual coupling significantly impacts the performance of parameter estimation.

A Two‐Stage Characterization Pipeline and Open‐Source Framework for Reproducible Tactile Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
The same soft tactile sensor returns different numbers when embodied in different robots. This is an Embodiment Gap that no shared framework currently captures transparently. A two‐stage characterization pipeline, paired with a FAIR open‐source digital datasheet, decouples intrinsic sensor behavior from embodiment effects and condenses cross‐laboratory

Neural Network Based Predictive Control Systems for Underwater Robotic Vehicles [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Oceanographic exploration is one of the fast emerging applications of robotics, and the design of controllers for Underwater Robotic Vehicles (URVs) is as challenging as for land based ones.

Design and Characterization of a Dual‐Mode Soft Robotic Flapping Propeller With Pneumatic Stiffness Modulation

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
A novel soft robotic propeller overcomes traditional efficiency‐flexibility tradeoffs via a hybrid pneumatic‐cable actuation strategy. This architecture enables active stiffness modulation with dual‐mode locomotion: tunable biomimetic swimming and earthworm‐inspired wriggling for confined spaces.

Review of EMC standards for underwater vehicles

open access: yesResults in Engineering
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is a critical consideration in the design and manufacturing of any kind of automobile, including underwater vehicles like Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV), to ensure their ...
