Objective Obesity, defined by body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2, is a risk factor for functional limitations in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, function varies among such individuals. Our objective was to evaluate the implications of obesity subtypes on longitudinal patterns of physical functioning in people with or at risk for knee OA ...

Global Dynamics for a Novel Differential Infectivity Epidemic Model with Stage Structure
A novel differential infectivity epidemic model with stage structure is formulated and studied. Under biological motivation, the stability of equilibria is investigated by the global Lyapunov functions.

Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status and Short‐Term Functional Outcomes in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Objective Individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can accumulate functional status (FS) impairment. We evaluated the association between neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, as measured by the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), and FS in a national SLE sample.

A Q‐Learning Algorithm to Solve the Two‐Player Zero‐Sum Game Problem for Nonlinear Systems
A Q‐learning algorithm to solve the two‐player zero‐sum game problem for nonlinear systems. ABSTRACT This paper deals with the two‐player zero‐sum game problem, which is a bounded L2$$ {L}_2 $$‐gain robust control problem. Finding an analytical solution to the complex Hamilton‐Jacobi‐Issacs (HJI) equation is a challenging task.

Persistence in seasonally varying predator-prey systems via the basic reproduction number [PDF]
We study persistence in general seasonally varying predator-prey models. Using the notion of basic reproduction numberR0and the theoretical results proved in Rebelo et al.

The tribological behavior of 100Cr6 steel spheres textured via Vickers microindentation is evaluated under lubricated sliding by varying both dimple size and density. Fine and dense textures significantly reduce friction across all lubrication regimes, while large dimples increase it.

Practical persistence in ecological models via comparison methods
A basic question in mathematical ecology is that of deciding whether or not a model for the population dynamics of interacting species predicts their long-term coexistence.

Uniform-in-time convergence bounds for Persistent Contrastive Divergence Algorithms
We propose a continuous-time formulation of persistent contrastive divergence (PCD) for maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) of unnormalised densities. Our approach expresses PCD as a coupled, multiscale system of stochastic differential equations (SDEs), which perform optimisation of the parameter and sampling of the associated parametrised density ...
