L^2-Betti numbers and Plancherel measure

open access: yes, 2013
We compute $L^2$-Betti numbers of postliminal, locally compact, unimodular groups in terms of ordinary dimensions of reduced cohomology with coefficients in irreducible unitary representations and the Plancherel measure.

On the unitary representation theory of locally compact contraction groups

open access: yes, 2023
The unitary representation theory of locally compact contraction groups and their semi-direct products with $\mathbb{Z}$ is studied. We put forward the problem of completely characterising such groups which are type I or CCR and this article provides a stepping stone towards a solution to this problem. In particular, we determine new examples of type I

Unitary representations of the groups of measurable and continuous functions with values in the circle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We give a classification of unitary representations of certain Polish, not necessarily locally compact, groups: the groups of all measurable functions with values in the circle and the groups of all continuous functions on compact, second countable, zero-

Shape Derivatives of the Eigenvalues of the De Rham Complex for Lipschitz Deformations and Variable Coefficients: Part I

open access: yesMathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We study eigenvalue problems for the de Rham complex on varying three‐dimensional domains. Our analysis includes the Helmholtz equation as well as the Maxwell system with mixed boundary conditions and non‐constant coefficients. We provide Hadamard‐type formulas for the shape derivatives under weak regularity assumptions on the domain and its ...

Impact of small‐scale gravity waves on tracer transport

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We extend a gravity wave (GW) parametrization to calculate the tracer transport due to the GW–Stokes drift and next‐order effects, where the approach is validated by comparing coarse‐resolution simulations with parametrized GWs to high‐resolution, wave‐resolving reference simulations.

Group amenability properties for von Neumann algebras [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
In his study of amenable unitary representations, M. E. B. Bekka asked if there is an analogue for such representations of the remarkable fixed-point property for amenable groups.

Integrability of unitary representations on reproducing kernel spaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Let g be a Banach Lie algebra and \tau : g ---> g an involution. Write g=h+q for the eigenspace decomposition of g with respect to \tau and g^c := h+iq for the dual Lie algebra.

AGRICULTURE IN A SOCIALIST CITY: Towards an Alter‐Urban Political Ecology

open access: yesInternational Journal of Urban and Regional Research, EarlyView.
Abstract Urban political ecology has developed as a critique of capitalist urbanization. This article develops the concept of alter‐urban political ecology to define urban environments emerging not from capitalist urbanization but from efforts to transform it. Drawing on archival research and ethnographic fieldwork in five urban farms in socialist Cuba,

Loop groups and noncommutative geometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We describe the representation theory of loop groups in terms of K-theory and noncommutative geometry. This is done by constructing suitable spectral triples associated with the level l projective unitary positive-energy representations of any given loop

Coulomb branch algebras via symplectic cohomology

open access: yesJournal of Topology, Volume 19, Issue 2, June 2026.
Abstract Let (M¯,ω)$(\bar{M}, \omega)$ be a compact symplectic manifold with convex boundary and c1(TM¯)=0$c_1(T\bar{M})=0$. Suppose that (M¯,ω)$(\bar{M}, \omega)$ is equipped with a convex Hamiltonian G$G$‐action for some connected, compact Lie group G$G$.
