What Are Ecosystem Services? [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper advocates consistently defined units of account to measure the contributions of nature to human welfare. We argue that such units have to date not been defined by environmental accounting advocates and that the term “ecosystem services” is too

Optimum Placement of Phasor Measurement Units in Power Systems

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 2019
In this paper, we proposed to evaluate the optimal phasor measurement unit (PMU) placement based on the sum of variance (SV) of the robust estimators. Variance is traditionally used as a measure of the quality of estimates.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

The anti‐CRISPR protein AcrIE8.1 inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system by directly binding to the Cascade subunit Cas11

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we present the structure of AcrIE8.1, a previously uncharacterized anti‐CRISPR protein that inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system. Through a combination of structural and biochemical analyses, we demonstrate that AcrIE8.1 directly binds to the Cas11 subunit of the Cascade complex to inhibit the CRISPR‐Cas system.

Transient Stability Prediction for Real-Time Operation by Monitoring the Relative Angle with Predefined Thresholds

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
Under real-time operation, early detection of oscillations that lead to instability is of noteworthy importance for power system operators. This paper demonstrates how the relative angle (RA) obtained with online data from phasor measurement units (PMUs)

A large‐scale retrospective study in metastatic breast cancer patients using circulating tumour DNA and machine learning to predict treatment outcome and progression‐free survival

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
There is an unmet need in metastatic breast cancer patients to monitor therapy response in real time. In this study, we show how a noninvasive and affordable strategy based on sequencing of plasma samples with longitudinal tracking of tumour fraction paired with a statistical model provides valuable information on treatment response in advance of the ...

Performance Criterion of Phasor Measurement Units for Distribution System State Estimation

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
A phasor measurement unit (PMU) is a device that can directly measure the phase angles of voltages and currents, with high accuracy, using accurate time signals.

The measurement of low- and high-impact in citation distributions: technical results [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper introduces a novel methodology for comparing the citation distributions of research units working in the same homogeneous field. Given a critical citation level (CCL), we suggest using two real valued indicators to describe the shape of any ...
