The Perils of Proportional Representation for Ethnic Minorities

One promises that proportional representation would represent minorities better; the other worries that it would empower the parties they have most reason to fear. This article argues that the promise is unreliable and the worry real.

When sharing becomes shameful: atmospheres of class formation in Namibia Quand le partage devient honteux : ambiances de formation de classes en Namibie

Anthropologists have long shown that asking for food in times of need is morally valued in rural Namibia. Yet among the Damara pastoralists with whom I work, people now increasingly describe feeling shame (taob) when they ask for food. In this article, I trace this shift to the affective dynamics of social class formation.
