Introduction: Emergency departments (ED) are notified by the ambulance clinicians before their arrival; this notification is called a “pre-alert”. Studies have shown that pre-alerting EDs for patients requiring time critical treatment have shown to improve initiation of early treatment and patient outcomes.

The approved centre was located on the lower ground floor of University Hospital Waterford. It was subdivided into two units: an acute unit with 14 beds (Brandon Unit) and a sub-acute unit with 30 beds (Comeragh Unit). The inspection of the Waterford Department of Psychiatry was unannounced and occurred over a four-day period.
