Estimation of Unreported Catch in a Commercial Trawl Fishery

open access: yesJournal of Northwest Atlantic Fishery Science, 1996
This paper describes a systematic approach that combines research survey and commercial landings data to estimate the total catch of a species, including discards, in a commercial trawl fishery. The method is applied to the 1989 Norwegian bottom trawl fishery for cod (Gadus morhua L.) in the Barents Sea and its utility is evaluated. Bottom trawl survey

Invisible catch: A century of bycatch and unreported removals in sea fisheries, Belgium 1929–2010 [PDF]

open access: yesFisheries Research, 2013
Abstract Publicly reported statistics on the production of fisheries refer to ‘landings’ as opposed to ‘catch’. However, well-informed decisions and evaluation of the impacts of fisheries on ecosystems must be based on total removals, so including the part of the catch that is discarded at sea or not reported as landings.

Harvest Pressure on Coastal Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua) from Recreational Fishing Relative to Commercial Fishing Assessed from Tag-Recovery Data. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Marine recreational fishing is a popular outdoor activity. However, knowledge about the magnitude of recreational catches relative to commercial catches in coastal fisheries is generally sparse. Coastal Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is a target species for

Historical trend in harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) abundance in Iceland back to the year 1912

open access: yesNAMMCO Scientific Publications, 2010
The harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) is Iceland’s most abundant seal and has likely been exploited since the settlement of the country. Detailed information on skin exports is available as far back as 1912, and suggests that the catch, consisting mainly of ...

Quantifying the impact on estimates of recruitment trends of previously unreported catches of age-0 bluefin tuna in the Meditteranean

open access: yes, 2021
We update the 2017 SCRS-agreed VPA assessment for the Eastern Atlantic bluefin tuna to include previously unreported catches of age-0 tuna in the Mediterranean. Except for three years in the 1980s, the change in estimates of annual recruitment are negligible. The pattern that indicates a regime shift in the 1980s remains.
