Modeling cooperation in unsignalized intersections
Abstract: The Nordic countries, among others, rely heavily on unsignalized intersections, even in congested conditions. When unsignalized intersections are blocked due to queue spillbacks from downstream bottlenecks, the intersections do not function as intended. Traditional gap acceptance models do not provide realistic results under such conditions.

This paper contributes to the modeling and analysis of unsignalized intersections. In classical gap acceptance models vehicles on the minor road accept any gap greater than the CRITICAL gap, and reject gaps below this threshold, where the gap is the time between two subsequent vehicles on the major road.

This paper proposes a new way to study traffic flow at an urban unsignalised intersection, through detailed space considerations, using cellular automata (CA). Heterogeneity and inconsistency are simulated by incorporation of different categories of driver behaviour and reassignment of categories with given probabilities at each time step.
