Forcing Function Effects on Unsteady Aerodynamic Gust Response: Part 1 — Forcing Functions

Volume 5: Manufacturing Materials and Metallurgy; Ceramics; Structures and Dynamics; Controls, Diagnostics and Instrumentation; Education, 1992
The fundamental gust modeling assumption is investigated by means of a series of experiments performed in the Purdue Annular Cascade Research Facility. The unsteady periodic flow field is generated by rotating rows of perforated plates and airfoil cascades. In this paper, the measured unsteady flow fields are compared to linear-theory gust requirements,

Problems in Forced Unsteady Fluid Mechanics.

1981
Abstract : Forced unsteady fluid flows are examined from the point of view of positive implications of the time dependency. Particular problems examined in a forced unsteady mode are jets, wind tunnels, wings, ramps and diffusers, dump combustors and vortex structure.

Unsteady Forced Vibration of Solids

2004
Using the wave approach, a diversity of unsteady (non-stationary, transient) dynamic processes in elastic and inelastic solids can be numerically simulated, including nonlinear problems.

Unsteady-State Solidification under Forced Flow Conditions

Materials Science Forum, 2007
The interaction between flow and progressing solidification front is of great importance, since it occurs in all casting processes. The present paper provides a better understanding of the flow phenomena and associated complex effects on solidification in a rectangular cavity under forced flow conditions, by means of experiments and computer ...

Unsteady Force Calculations in Turbomachinery

1991
Abstract : This report gives a review of the various types of unsteady flow phenomena that occur within a turbomachine and examines existing methods for computing several of these flows. Then, we discuss a method for applying two- dimensional, unsteady, thin airfoil theory in a stripwise manner to computer the unsteady forces and moments on the shaft ...

Unsteady forces on elongated bluff bodies

Physics of Fluids
The aerodynamic shape of the bluff body plays a significant role in determining the unsteady drag force resulting from the three-dimensional (3D) distortion of approaching free-stream turbulence. This paper conducted pressure measurements of bluff bodies with four different cross sections (square, rectangular, circular, elliptic, with different aspect ...

UNSTEADY LIFT FORCE ON A TOWED SPHERE

Journal of Fluids and Structures, 1998
Abstract An experimental effort to characterize the broadband flow-induced lift forces on a spherical body that is towed underwater is described. The body itself is the transducer which is comprised of a small geophone encased in a near-neutrally-buoyant sphere, 7·62 cm in diameter.

Unsteady Thermal Throat Position under Acoustic Forcing

2023
The interactions between acoustics waves and the thermal throat in a simplified low-Mach dual-mode ramjet chamber are numerically investigated. The present study aims to understand the thermal throat function in the combustion instabilities observed in such engines.

Model for Estimating Unsteady Force Derivatives

Journal of Aircraft, 2012
The estimation of the unsteady force derivatives through flight measurements is difficult to perform because the sensitivity of the force coefficients with respect to spin rate and time derivatives of the aerodynamic angles is smaller than the static variations of the aerodynamic coefficients.

Unsteady wind induced forces in structural members

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 2002
This paper describes an analysis of full-scale unsteady surface pressure coefficients and member strains measured on a duopitch portal frame structure. On the roof of the structure it is shown that there are high-frequency fluctuations that are not fully resolved at the normal sampling rate of 5 samples/s.
