A new optimal reactive power flow (ORPF) method is proposed which considers the inclusion of unified power flow controllers (UPFC). The modelling and inclusion of UPFC in the solution of power flow equations is presented. The ORPF problem is formulated as a fuzzy optimisation problem considering the objectives of minimising system transmission loss and

Dynamic security corrective control by UPFCs
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2001This paper deals with the development of a nonlinear programming methodology for evaluating corrective actions to improve the dynamic security of power systems when transient instability is detected. Remedial actions are implemented by exploiting the fast response of unified power flow controllers (UPFCs). The algorithm is implemented and tested on the

This presentation describes the modeling techniques for a voltage source converter (VSC)-based flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) controller, such as a unified power flow controller (UPFC). The model is implemented in an Electro-Magnetic Transients Program (EMTP) simulation package and the results are compared with the ...

Transient stability enhancement with UPFC
IET-UK International Conference on Information and Communication Technology in Electrical Sciences (ICTES 2007), 2007In this paper, the most versatile FACTS device UPFC is modelled and implemented in the SMIB (single machine infinite bus) system and standard 9 - bus system (Anderson and Fouad, 1977). The performances of these systems are simulated by using MATLAB. It has been found that the critical clearing time of the system has increased after including the UPFC ...

Passivity-based control of UPFCs
2009 International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems (PEDS), 2009We explore the passivity-based control (PBC) for robust UPFC controller design. Under this framework, the dynamical model of UPFC will be represented by a Euler-Lagrangian (EL) system with a set of EL parameters. The energy-dissipative properties of system model are fully retained.

An alternative control strategy of a UPFC, based on hysteresis control of the switches is presented. It is shown that a UPFC under hysteresis control will have nearly sinusoidal injected output current and voltage for reactive power and real power compensation while keeping the UPFC in its simplest configuration.

Line congestion relief using UPFC
2013 International Conference on Power, Energy and Control (ICPEC), 2013Congestion is a growing problem in the modern power system, as systems are interconnected and are always operating near stability limit which results in rapid voltage drop due to heavy load demand. Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is one of the latest generation Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices, which is able to control ...

Multi-teriminal UPFC for power system deregulation
2000 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting. Conference Proceedings (Cat. No.00CH37077), 2002One original purpose of FACTS controllers is to increase the transmission capacity of existing lines thus deferring the necessity of building new lines. FACTS, such as the unified power flow controller (UPFC), have also been regarded as controllers for routing power in the market-driven, deregulated power systems.

Summary form only given. This paper presents a screening technique for greatly reducing the computation involved in determining the optimal location of a unified power flow controller (UPFC) in a power system. The first-order sensitivities of the generation cost with respect to UPFC control parameters are derived.

UPFC operations under stressed system conditions
IEEE Power Engineering Society Summer Meeting,, 2003Power systems often work in stressed conditions nowadays. A unified power flow controller (UPFC) with its capability to regulate significant amounts of real and reactive power flow simultaneously and independently can, at its full capacity, exert effects on the system that are strong enough to be counted as transient events.
