Stability-constrained operation for UPFC devices

2001 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition. Developing New Perspectives (Cat. No.01CH37294), 2002
Improper operations of UPFC can make power system lose its synchronism. This paper explores the principle of this stability problem, and a simple system with single UPFC is set up to demonstrate the existence of such stability problems. An algorithm is proposed to determine whether a UPFC operation is stability constrained or not.

Modulation and Control of Transformerless UPFC

IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2016
In this paper, a modulation and control method for the new transformerless unified power flow controller (UPFC) is presented. As is well known, the conventional UPFC that consists of two back-to-back inverters requires bulky and often complicated zigzag transformers for isolation and reaching high power rating with desired voltage waveforms.

Multi-level controller design for UPFC

Proceedings. International Conference on Power System Technology, 2003
This paper presents a two-level controller design for UPFC, i.e., internal level controller and external level controller. A switch is designed in the external level to determine the functional operation of UPFC. The external level controller is a conventional PI controller to provide the references signals for the internal level.

Research of MMC-UPFC Control Strategy

2019 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT Asia), 2019
The unified power flow controller (UPFC) as the intelligent power grid energy controller is a more comprehensive flexible ac device that can improve power grid operation, transmission levels and power quality. The differences in UPFC topology and its control strategies have an important impact on its output characteristics.

The operation experience of KEPCO UPFC

2005 International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems, 2005
KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) has installed UPFC (unified power flow controller), voltage-source FACTS (flexible AC transmission system) device at Kangjin substation, Kangjin-gun, Jeonnam province in May 2003. Kangjin UPFC is composed of 40 MVA shunt inverter and 40 MVA series inverter, and has three operation modes, STATCOM (static ...

UPFC control employing gradient descent search

Proceedings of the 37th Annual North American Power Symposium, 2005., 2005
Increasing demand coupled with limitations on new construction indicate that existing power transmission must be better controlled in order to continue reliable operation. Recent advances in FACTS devices provide a mechanism to better control power flow on the transmission network.

Power quality improvement by using UPFC

2017 2nd International Conference for Convergence in Technology (I2CT), 2017
Power system harmonics is one of the major problems in power system operation. If the harmonics can increases and decreases transmission line capacity which may cause interruption in energy supply. Therefore, flexible AC transmission system (FACTs) devices are employed to reduce this harmonics.

A UPFC based on matrix converter

2010 1st Power Electronic & Drive Systems & Technologies Conference (PEDSTC), 2010
The main concept of unified power flow controller (UPFC) is based on back to back connection of two inverters with a common capacitor dc link. This capacitor brings about several disadvantages such as affecting the reliability of UPFC. This paper proposes a new topology for UPFC based on matrix converter.

Dynamic decoupled compensator for UPFC control

Proceedings. International Conference on Power System Technology, 2003
It has been reported that there is a strong dynamic interaction between the active and reactive power flow through a transmission line when they are controlled by a unified power flow controller. This paper proposes a dynamic decoupled (DD) compensator, used in conjunction with a proportional-integral (PI) controller, to eliminate the dynamic ...

Optimal Power Flow Study Using UPFC

2018 International Conference on Recent Innovations in Electrical, Electronics & Communication Engineering (ICRIEECE), 2018
The Controlled Reactive Power Gives the Desired Optimal flow of Power in the line. The FACTS devices effectively control the flow of Power in the lines. Improvement of voltage profile and minimization of losses are studied here with Optimal and non- Optimal Power Flow.
