Some properties of upper atmosphere dynamics

Reviews of Geophysics, 1978
Composition and temperature data from satellite measurements and from radar backscatter observations show that dynamics is a major key in our understanding of the upper atmosphere. Individual gases are tracers of wind fields which in turn are driven by the energy and momentum sources of the complex magnetosphere‐thermosphere‐lower atmosphere system. As

Magnetospheric convection and upper atmospheric dynamics

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1976
Ionospheric plasma, driven into motion by the magnetospheric convection electric field, interacts with the neutral upper atmosphere via collisions. These collisions provide both a momentum source (ion drag) and an energy source (Joule heating) for the neutral atmosphere.

Dynamics of the antarctic upper atmosphere

Planetary and Space Science, 1989
Abstract This review is limited to consideration of ground-based radio and optical measurements on winds in the Antarctic mesosphere and thermosphere. Observations on the mean flow and the 12 and 24 h tides in the 70–110 km range are discussed in relation to models.

Ion Dynamics and Velocities in Titan's Upper Atmosphere

2023
The Cassini mission yielded a treasure trove of information on Saturn’s largest moon Titan. With many flybys of this complex moon Cassini revealed many aspects of Titan’s upper atmosphere and interaction with Saturn’s magnetosphere. In many ways Cassini revealed that this moon is unique in that it sustains a dense atmosphere and ionosphere even without

A dynamical model of upper-atmospheric helium

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1977
This numerical study of the global distribution of helium in the terrestrial thermosphere is based on the extension of a three-dimensional single-fluid numerical model of the thermosphere previously developed by the authors to treat the dynamics of a minor gas imbedded in a background gas made up of N2, O2, and O.
