Sharper Variance Upper Bound for Unbiased Estimation in Inverse Sampling
Sathe (1977) improved upon the bounds of Mikulski and Smith (1976) for the variance of inverse binomial estimator. We have obtained still better upper bounds. The betterment is numerically illustrated.

ALGEBRAIC NONLINEARITY IN VOLTERRA-HAMMERSTEIN EQUATIONS [PDF]
Here a posteriori error estimate for the numerical solution of nonlinear Voltena- Hammerstein equations is given. We present an error upper bound for nonlinear Voltena-Hammastein integral equations, in which the form of nonlinearity is algebraic and ...

Power law in a bounded range: Estimating the lower and upper bounds from sample data
Power law distributions are widely observed in chemical physics, geophysics, biology, and beyond. The independent variable x of these distributions has an obligatory lower bound and, in many cases, also an upper bound. Estimating these bounds from sample data is notoriously difficult, with a recent method involving O(N3) operations, where N denotes ...

Rotational Failure Mechanism for Face Stability of Circular Shield Tunnels in Frictional Soils
Face stability analyses of shield-driven tunnels are often carried out to determine the required support pressure on the tunnel face. Although various three-dimensional mechanisms have been proposed for circular faces of tunnels in frictional and/or ...

An Upper Confidence Bound Approach to Estimating the Maximum Mean
Estimating the maximum mean finds a variety of applications in practice. In this paper, we study estimation of the maximum mean using an upper confidence bound (UCB) approach where the sampling budget is adaptively allocated to one of the systems. We study in depth the existing grand average (GA) estimator, and propose a new largest-size average (LSA ...

Superposition Spinal Codes With Unequal Error Protection Property
In this paper, we propose a rateless superposition spinal code for binary erasure channel, which can provide unequal error protection (UEP) and unequal recovery time (URT) properties.

Estimating Cost Savings from Early Cancer Diagnosis
We estimate treatment cost-savings from early cancer diagnosis. For breast, lung, prostate and colorectal cancers and melanoma, which account for more than 50% of new incidences projected in 2017, we combine published cancer treatment cost estimates by ...

Combinatorics and resource circuit–based enumeration of reachable states for SPR
Reachability graphs can accurately reflect the state information of bounded Petri nets. However, the complexity of reachability graphs generation is exponential, which makes time waste and sometimes the computation may stop midway after a long time due ...
