Comparison of Dielectric Recovery After Arc Burning in SF6 Gas and Its Potential Alternatives

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Although sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) exhibits exceptional insulating properties, it is a potent greenhouse gas. Therefore, studying alternatives to SF6 is critical for developing environmentally friendly high‐voltage electrical equipment.

Damage to metallic samples produced by measured lightning currents [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
A total of 10 sample disks of 2024-T3 aluminum and 4130 ferrous steel were exposed to rocket-triggered lightning currents at the Kennedy Space Center test site.

A Macroscopic Inception Criterion for the Upward Leaders of Natural Lightning [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2005
The increased use of electronic equipments in day-to-day life as well as the steady increase in the height of the structures have considerably increased the lightning threat. As a result, a suitable lightning protection system has become very essential.

Axial muscle‐fibre orientations in larval zebrafish

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 246, Issue 4, Page 517-533, April 2025.
In 4 days post‐fertilization zebrafish larvae, the fast axial muscle fibres follow helical trajectories that taper towards the tail. Adjacent muscle fibres form substantial angles relative to each other to accommodate this pattern. Using a novel semi‐automatic method, we quantified 3D fibre angles over the whole muscle volume.

Multi‐Instrumental Observation of an Upward Cloud‐To‐Air Discharge Above a Mediterranean Storm

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
On the night of 1 November 2022, a luminous discharge was produced above a storm over the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. An unprecedented set of optical and electrical data makes it possible to characterize this event.

Backward Darts and the Subsequent Scattered Discharges Occurring Along Lightning Positive Leader Branches

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract We used the LOw‐Frequency ARray (LOFAR) to identify two new types of lightning discharges occurring along the tracks of earlier positive leaders. The first is a kind of intracloud dart leader that we call a “backward dart” whose behavior appears counterintuitive given the positive polarity of the channel, as they are negative dart leaders that

Can ERA5 Be Used to Study Mesoscale Convective System Climatological Characteristics?

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) produce more than half of tropical rainfall and are central to the global hydrologic cycle. As the climate warms, environments favorable for MCSs may become more common; however, limited observational records hamper understanding of how MCSs respond to variations and changes in their environments.
