Carcinoma of the urachus

Two cases of carcinoma of the urachus are reported, 1 involving the dome of the bladder and 1 occurring beneath the peritoneum of the anterior abdominal wall below the umbilicus at the apex of an elongated bladder. Both patients died shortly after diagnosis, a fact which emphasizes the poor prognosis of this group of patients.

Follicular lymphoma of the urachus

This case report describes an elderly man who presented with mild lower urinary tract symptoms without haematuria. During his workup, an incidental finding of a urachal mass was diagnosed by CT. He underwent robotic partial cystectomy with en bloc urachal excision achieving clear frozen section margins.

Patent Urachus in the Adult

The urachus is a developmental tube between the bladder and umbilicus which normally undergoes closure prior to birth. Its failure to close leads to congenital anomalies, usually presenting in the neonate, but rarely in the adult. Two such adult cases are presented, and the embryology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

Prognosis in Carcinoma of the Urachus

The literature regarding the prognosis of carcinoma of the urachus is reviewed. Factors affecting the prognosis are discussed. En bloc partial cystectomy, if feasible, is the form of treatment which gives the best long-term survival rate. A series of 5 cases is presented with a 13-year survival rate of 40%.
