An Optimized Multi‐Stage Drainage Cannula Design for Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
This study utilized an extensive optimization involving n = 540 design of experiments to produce a superior drainage cannula design. Compared to the clinically used Maquet model, our optimized design demonstrated reduced blood stagnation volumes, increased cannula tip velocities, and higher upper body drainage, potentially minimizing risk of thrombosis

Out in the cold? A review of Early Middle Palaeolithic settlements in northern Central Europe, age data and geological preconditions for site formation and preservation

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The characteristics of settlement of Neanderthals in northern Central Europe during the earlier phases of the Middle Palaeolithic (Marine Isotope Stage 8–6) have been a matter of debate for decades, specifically regarding the population dynamics at such latitudes during the coldest phases. In this paper, we review the known archaeological record of the

Direct Numerical Simulations of Inhalation in a 23‐Generation Lung Model

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering, Volume 42, Issue 8, August 2026.
The first direct numerical simulation of a 23‐bifurcation lung model is carried out. Fast and intense oscillations in the laminar flow are found in deep generations: their time scales are related to the upstream pressure fluctuations, and their intensity is related to upstream flow‐splitting fluctuations.

Comparison of a Miniaturized Implantable Two‐Stage Rotodynamic Blood Pump to Equivalent Single‐Stage Concepts

open access: yesArtificial Organs, Volume 50, Issue 8, Page 1125-1135, August 2026.
This study aims to evaluate the potential of a multistage pump design to enhance hemocompatibility in left ventricular assist devices. We found that the two‐stage concept offers favorable hemolysis measures compared to single‐stage designs, as the reduction in peak shear stresses outweighs the disadvantage associated with prolonged residence time ...

Protections and Rights: An Intersectional and Diachronic Perspective on Women and the Law in Latin American History

open access: yesHistory Compass, Volume 24, Issue 4, August 2026.
ABSTRACT In just a few decades, historiography on gender and law in Latin America has grown from foundational works establishing the dimensions of women's legal status in colonial compilations and later national codes to scholarship that considers the distinctions among different social groups of women and traces women as active agents in pluralistic ...

PECULIARITIES IN THE IONOSPHERIC SCINTILLATION SPECTRAL INDEX BEHAVIOR BY OBSERVATIONS OF THE COSMIC RADIO SOURCES AT THE DECAMETER WAVELENGTHS

open access: yesRadio Physics and Radio Astronomy, 2019
Purpose: With relation to radio astronomy, ionospheric scintillation of discrete cosmic radio sources is an undesirable effect. At the same time, ionospheric scintillations carry information on the ionospheric turbulence and are a separate object of ...

Women, Crime, and Law in Latin America's Nineteenth Century

open access: yesHistory Compass, Volume 24, Issue 4, August 2026.
ABSTRACT This article examines the literature on women as perpetrators of crime in 19th‐century Latin America, a topic largely overlooked in historical scholarship. While most studies focus on women as victims of domestic or sexual violence, this work explores women as perpetrators of crime, specifically reproductive crimes (abortion and infanticide ...

FREQUENCY DEPENDENCE OF THE IONOSPHERE SCINTILLATION PARAMETERS ON THE OBSERVATIONS OF COSMIC RADIO SOURCES AT THE DECAMETER WAVE RANGE

open access: yesOdessa Astronomical Publications, 2019
When signal from radio source propagates through irregularity layer in the ionosphere it has fluctuations of the amplitude (scintillations) which time spectrum has power form with index α = 3. It was shown that such form of the time spectrum of amplitude
