Characterizing urban heat islands in karst areas-the case of Kunming and Guiyang in Southwest China

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment
Urban heat island (UHI) has posed a threat to sustainable development, and the identification of the spatial characteristics of UHI is a prerequisite for the mitigation of UHI effects. Taking Kunming City and Guiyang City in the karst region of Southwest

Impact of Extreme Heat on Emergency Department Admissions for Childhood and Adult Asthma: An Evaluation of Earth Observations and Heat Wave Definitions

open access: yesGeoHealth, Volume 10, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Extreme heat has been associated with adverse health outcomes, yet its impact on asthma exacerbations remains understudied. This is, in part, due to data limitations: research that relies on weather station records and aggregated health statistics cannot resolve fine‐scale differences in heat impacts.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a stronger inhibitor of overwintering dormancy than urban warming in mosquitoes

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 5, May 2026.
Low intensities of warm white ALAN were a stronger inhibitor of diapause initiation than urban warming, indicating that changes in brightness or light colour may not be sufficient to mitigate ecological impacts and ALAN from common sources can extend seasonal mosquito biting activity and reproduction into late autumn.

The Impact of Urban Heat Islands: Assessing Vulnerability in Indonesia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The impacts of global change can be felt by local communities during both short-term events such as intense storms and long-term changes such as rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns.

Urban Land Surface Effects on Summertime Clouds and Moist Convection in Houston Under Different Synoptic Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 7, 16 April 2026.
Abstract Urban landscapes modify cloud formation and convection through complex thermodynamic and aerodynamic processes; however, their influence under different synoptic regimes remains poorly understood. This study investigates the impact of the Houston metropolitan area on summertime cloud cover and convective cell characteristics using a ...

Observation Experiments and Analysis of Summer Urban Heat Island in Cold Region Based on Low-Altitude Dual-Source Remote Sensing: A Case Study of Zhengzhou University Main Campus

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
Rapid urbanization worldwide has exacerbated the urban heat island (UHI) effect. Although studies on UHI effect have already become a hotspot, high-precision UHI investigations in cold regions utilizing remote sensing technologies are still underexplored.

A statistical approach for estimating mean maximum urban temperature excess. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Munkánkban a városi hősziget (UHI) maximális napi kifejlődését vizsgáltuk Szegeden, a beépítettségi paraméterek függvényében. A hőmérsékleti adatok valamint a beépítettségi arány, a vízfelszín-arány, az égbolt láthatósági index és az épületmagasság ...
