Trends in thunderstorm days, lightning activity, squalls and the environmental factors in Hong Kong

open access: yesWeather, Volume 81, Issue 8, Page 248-257, August 2026.
This study analyses trends in Hong Kong's convective weather using long‐term observer‐based and shorter‐term instrument‐based data. Annual thunderstorm days increased significantly by 1.9 days decade−1 in 1947–2024, notably in June–September, consistent with increasingly favourable warm‐season environments for thunderstorms.

Evaluating Fire Indices for Fire Ignition and Spread Rate in the Western United States

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Wildfires are complex events that are challenging to model. Researchers and land managers often rely on fire indices as a proxy of fire risk in operational forecasts and future projections. However, in the scientific literature, the choice of which fire index to use is often arbitrary and not tied to specific fire behaviors. Here, we provide a

A Novel Approach to Characterize and Model Drywell Infiltration Capacity

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Drywells are vadose‐zone wells constructed for infiltration and recharge, typically positioned far above the water table. They provide for efficient infiltration, with high infiltration rates per land area, because the infiltration process is below the land surface.
