Two to four percent of the population carry meningococcus in the nasopharynx. Pharyngeal infections may be the entry point for blood-borne metastatic lesions throughout the body. Primary infections in other tissues are rare, and proof of transmission from a known carrier to a specific patient is uncommon.

Nongonococcal urethritis is a frequent genital infection, in most cases caused by Chlamydia trachomatis or Ureaplasma urealyticum. Diagnosis requires demonstration of urethritis and exclusion of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection. Preferred treatment is seven days of tetracycline hydrochloride or doxycycline, to both the patient and partners.

The term urethral syndrome reflects irritation in the external urethral (striated) sphincter. The cause of this condition may be as much poor voiding habits as it is infection or trauma. Treatment principles therefore involve retraining the voiding mechanism, as well as the judicious use of antibiotics, skeletal muscle relaxants, and an alpha-blocker ...

Urethral instability is still evolving as a clinical entity. Using pressure variation of 15 cm water or more at the point of maximum urethral pressure (MUP), urethral pressure profilometry on patients referred for urodynamic assessment for lower urinary tract symptoms revealed urethral instability in 6.4% of 608 patients.
