Age‐Based Variations in Frequent Emergency Department (ED) Use Among Older Adults: An Analysis Using the New York University–Johns Hopkins University Emergency Department Algorithm (NYU/JHU‐EDA)

open access: yesWorld Medical &Health Policy, Volume 17, Issue 3, Page 411-424, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Population aging impacts the utilization of health services, especially in Emergency Departments (EDs). A rising share of older adults in the US report ED use, especially frequent ED use, defined as ≥ 4 visits annually. Prior works have examined frequent utilization of EDs among geriatric populations, but no study has focused on age‐based ...

Limited evidence of biodiversity spillover from forest fragments into oil palm plantations in the Amazon

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 8, Page 1939-1952, August 2025.
Converting primary forest into oil palm plantations results in substantial biodiversity losses, highlighting the urgent need to preserve the few remaining large forest fragments in the area. Measures that enhance matrix permeability are essential to conserving the evolutionary and functional integrity of Amazonian landscapes and mitigating the negative

Investigating post‐earthquake hospital transportation for casualties through agent‐based modeling

open access: yesEarthquake Spectra, Volume 41, Issue 3, Page 2028-2059, August 2025.
We develop a methodology for modeling post‐earthquake hospital needs and accessibility, coupling a probabilistic regional casualty risk model with a novel agent‐based human behavior model. We use it to study hospital transportation in two socio‐economically distinct districts of Lima, Peru, after a hypothetical moment magnitude 8.0 event.

Temporalities in Crisis: Analysing the Sacchi v. Argentina Case and Children's Rights in the Climate Emergency

open access: yesChildren &Society, Volume 39, Issue 4, Page 854-863, July 2025.
ABSTRACT This article examines the Sacchi v. Argentina case, a landmark legal action led by children against five states for their role in climate change, analysed through the lens of temporality. The case, brought before the Committee on the Rights of the Child, was pivotal in linking the climate crisis to children's rights, despite being ruled ...

Three‐dimensional conservation planning of fish biodiversity metrics to achieve the deep‐sea 30×30 conservation target

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract Accelerating rate of human impact and environmental change severely affects marine biodiversity and increases the urgency to implement the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) 30×30 plan for conserving 30% of sea areas by 2030. However, area‐based conservation targets are complex to identify in a 3‐dimensional (3D) ocean where deep‐sea ...

Cacao grafting increases crop yield without compromising biodiversity

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 3, Page 579-592, March 2025.
Grafting is a successful approach for rejuvenating old, unproductive cacao trees, enhancing smallholder income opportunities and thus reducing pressure for new deforestation‐based plantations. Grafting briefly reduced arthropod abundance and diversity, but recovered in a short time.
