Intermittent catheter use can damage the urinary tract and predispose to infection. We deployed a complex human urothelial model to investigate. Catheter contact induced compressive and shear stress causing umbrella cell disruption, reduced barrier function, inflammation and increased cell adhesion to the catheter surface.

Ablation of smooth muscle myosin heavy chain SM2 increases smooth muscle contractility and results in postnatal death in mice [PDF]
The smooth muscle myosin heavy chains (SMHC) are motor proteins powering smooth muscle contraction. Alternate splicing of SHMC gene at the C-terminus produces SM1, and SM2 myosin isoforms; SM2 (200 kDa) contains a unique 9-amino-acid sequence at the ...

Cancer and Hypertension: Shared Mechanisms, Treatment Interactions, and Clinical Management
ABSTRACT Cancer and hypertension (HTN) frequently coexist, and their relationship is increasingly recognized as a clinically relevant intersection between oncology and cardiovascular medicine. However, the extent to which this association reflects shared risk factors, common biological mechanisms, or treatment‐related effects remains incompletely ...

ABSTRACT Cervical carcinosarcoma (CCS), also known as malignant mixed Müllerian tumor (MMMT) of the cervix, is an exceptionally rare and aggressive biphasic neoplasm composed of both epithelial and mesenchymal malignant components. Due to its rarity, optimal management strategies are not well established, particularly in low‐resource settings.

Mucosal‐Associated Invariant T Cells in Health and Disease
The roles of MAIT cells in health and disease and their therapeutic applications. In healthy individuals, riboflavin metabolites secreted by commensal bacteria at mucosal sites are presented by MR1, leading to the activation of MAIT cells. Activated MAIT cells can maintain the barrier integrity of mucosal tissues in a steady state or migrate to the ...

Iron and Other Metal Ions in Human Health and Disease
Iron, copper, zinc, and calcium orchestrate cellular function through distinct yet cooperative mechanisms: redox‐active iron and copper cycle between oxidation states to act as Fenton catalysts and electron carriers in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS); redox‐inert zinc serves as a structural component of zinc‐finger proteins and a catalytic cofactor ...

Glutamine Metabolism in Health and Diseases
Glutamine metabolism acts as a metabolic hub connecting cellular stress adaptation, immune regulation, and disease development. Through regulating energy production, biosynthesis, redox balance, and nitrogen metabolism, glutamine supports cellular homeostasis under physiological and pathological conditions.
