Detection of the most influential variables for preventing postpartum urinary incontinence using machine learning techniques [PDF]

open access: yesDigital Health, Volume 8, 2022, 20552076221111289
Background: Postpartum urinary incontinence (PUI) is a common issue among postnatal women. Previous studies identified potential related variables, but lacked analysis on certain intrinsic and extrinsic patient variables during pregnancy. Objective: The study aims to evaluate the most influential variables in PUI using machine learning, focusing on ...

Randomized phase III trial of piroxicam in combination with mitoxantrone or carboplatin for first-line treatment of urogenital tract transitional cell carcinoma in dogs. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BackgroundReported response rates of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) in dogs to piroxicam in combination with either mitoxantrone or carboplatin are similar; however, it is unknown whether either drug might provide superior duration of response ...

Validity of the International Prostate Symptoms Score in predicting urinary retention after joint replacement

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Surgery, 2019
Postoperative urinary retention necessitating catheterization after major lower limb arthroplasty surgery adds to the patients’ postoperative discomfort and increases the risk of urinary tract infection with potential risk of transient bacteraemia and ...

Biofilm Control by Active Topography with Mucin Coating

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports a new antifouling strategy based on a bioinspired design. Mucin coating enhances biofilm control by active topography with beating micron‐sized pillars. Besides the mechanical force of beating pillars, the antibiofilm activities also involve biological factors since mucin coating inhibits swarming motility and c‐di‐GMP synthesis in ...

Exploration of Surgeons' Natural Skills for Robotic Catheterization [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Despite having the robotic catheter systems which have recently emerged as safe way of performing cardiovascular interventions, a number of important challenges are yet to be investigated. One of them is exploration of surgeons' natural skills during vascular catheterization with robotic systems.

Semi-Automatic Labeling and Semantic Segmentation of Gram-Stained Microscopic Images from DIBaS Dataset [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
In this paper, a semi-automatic annotation of bacteria genera and species from DIBaS dataset is implemented using clustering and thresholding algorithms. A Deep learning model is trained to achieve the semantic segmentation and classification of the bacteria species. Classification accuracy of 95% is achieved.

Metal–Organic Framework‐Based Antimicrobial Touch Surfaces to Prevent Cross‐Contamination

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A MOF‐based antimicrobial door handle cover is developed. It completely inhibits the cross‐contamination of Gram‐positive bacterial species (Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis), Gram‐negative bacterial species (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii), and fungi (Candida albicans). Abstract Infection diseases

Screening of Pneumonia and Urinary Tract Infection at Triage using TriNet [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Due to the steady rise in population demographics and longevity, emergency department visits are increasing across North America. As more patients visit the emergency department, traditional clinical workflows become overloaded and inefficient, leading to prolonged wait-times and reduced healthcare quality.

An introduction to the epidemiology and burden of urinary tract infections

open access: yesTherapeutic Advances in Urology, 2019
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common outpatient infections, with a lifetime incidence of 50−60% in adult women. This is a narrative review aimed at acting as an introduction to the epidemiology and burden of UTIs.
