The evolving proteome of a complex extracellular matrix, the Oikopleura house. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Extracellular matrices regulate biological processes at the level of cells, tissues, and in some cases, entire multicellular organisms. The subphylum Urochordata exemplifies the latter case, where animals are partially or completely enclosed in "houses ...

Colony Specificity in the Xenogeneic Combinations among Four Botrylloides Species (Urochordata, Ascidiacea) [PDF]

open access: yesZoological Science, 2002
Xenogeneic rejection reactions were histologically examined among four compound ascidians of the genus Botrylloides; B. simodensis, B. lentus, B. fuscus and B. violaceus, to compare with the allogeneic rejections of these species. When the incompatible conspecifics were brought into contact, hemolytic rejections occurred at the point where the tunic of

Expression and possible functions of a horizontally transferred glycosyl hydrolase gene, GH6-1, in Ciona embryogenesis

open access: yesEvoDevo, 2023
Background The Tunicata or Urochordata is the only animal group with the ability to synthesize cellulose directly and cellulose is a component of the tunic that covers the entire tunicate body. The genome of Ciona intestinalis type A contains a cellulose

CiC3-1a-Mediated Chemotaxis in the Deuterostome InvertebrateCiona intestinalis(Urochordata) [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Immunology, 2003
AbstractDeuterostome invertebrates possess complement genes, and in limited instances complement-mediated functions have been reported in these organisms. However, the organization of the complement pathway(s), as well as the functions exerted by the cloned gene products, are largely unknown.

Taxonomic Study of Family Doliolidae (Urochordata: Thaliacea: Doliolida) from Korea [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity, 2010
Four species in two genera of the family Doliolidae are identified and re-described in Korean waters: Doliolum denticulatum Quoy and Gaimard, 1834, Doliolum nationalis Borgert, 1894, Dolioletta gegenbauri (Uljanin, 1884), and Dolioletta tritonis (Herdman, 1888). Dolioletta gegenbauri is newly recorded in Korean fauna.

Computational prediction and experimental validation of Ciona intestinalis microRNA genes

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2007
Background This study reports the first collection of validated microRNA genes in the sea squirt, Ciona intestinalis. MicroRNAs are processed from hairpin precursors to ~22 nucleotide RNAs that base pair to target mRNAs and inhibit expression.

TAXONOMIC CORRELATES OF BIOLUMINESCENCE AMONG APPENDICULARIANS (UROCHORDATA: LARVACEA)

open access: yesThe Biological Bulletin, 1985
Larvaceans, common members of marine plankton communities, filter-feed with renewable, external, mucous houses. The houses of some species of Oikopleuridae produce endogenous bioluminescent flashes upon mechanical stimulation and may contribute significantly to surface luminescence.
