Deciphering the biosynthetic pathways of lichen acids

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 250, Issue 3, Page 1784-1799, May 2026.
Summary Depsides and depsidones are polyketide‐derived lichen acids widely distributed in lichen thalli, yet the biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) responsible for their production remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we investigated the diversity and evolutionary relationships of polyketide BGCs in lichens.

Novel chiral molecular tweezer from (+)-usnic acid.

open access: yes, 2009
International audienceA new chiral molecular tweezer was synthesized with (1R,2R)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane as spacer and two molecules of (+)-usnic acid as pincers. The ability of this molecular tweezer to bind 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone was studied.

Improved Chemosensitivity in Metastatic Castration‐Resistant Prostate Cancer: The Synergistic Effects of S‐Adenosylmethionine and Cabazitaxel

open access: yesCancer Medicine, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Metastatic castration‐resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) is the most aggressive kind of prostate cancer (PCa). Because the traditional taxane‐based therapy is ineffective, cabazitaxel (CBZ), a second‐generation, semisynthetic taxane, has been developed.

An improved phylogeny and revised taxonomy of Catillariaceae (Lecanoromycetes, Ascomycota)

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 75, Issue 2, April 2026.
Abstract The boundaries of the family Catillariaceae have largely remained untested through phylogenetic methods. Recent studies have led to the transfer of several genera previously classified in Catillariaceae to the newly described family Leprocaulaceae. Despite these changes, the distinction between Catillariaceae, Leprocaulaceae, and Catinariaceae

: Mitodepressive, clastogenic and biochemical effects of (+)-usnic acid in mice.

open access: yes, 1991
Mice were treated orally with aqueous suspensions of (+)-usnic acid in a single dose of either 100 or 200 mg/kg. The effects on femur cells and proteins and on nucleic acids of liver cells were studied 24-72 h after treatment. (+)-Usnic acid was found to

Specialized Metabolites of the Lichen Vulpicida pinastri Act as Photoprotective Agents

open access: yesMolecules, 2017
The extreme resiliency of lichens to UV radiations makes them an interesting model to find new photoprotective agents acting as UV-blockers and antioxidant.

Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activities of Usnea barbata (L.) F.H. Wigg. Dry Extracts in Different Solvents

open access: yesPlants, 2021
Lichens represent a significant source of antioxidants due to numerous metabolites that can reduce free radicals. Usnea barbata (L.) F.H. Wigg. has been recognized and used since ancient times for its therapeutic effects, some of which are based on its ...

Strengths and Limitations of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate as an Irritant Control in Patch Testing

open access: yesContact Dermatitis, Volume 94, Issue 4, Page 338-346, April 2026.
Positive SLS reactions occurred in 22% of 43 478 patients and correlated predominantly with irritant‐prone allergens. Thirty‐one of 189 allergen preparations showed significant associations, strongest for cocamidopropyl betaine, formaldehyde, sorbic acid and DPG. A simple positive/negative SLS classification was diagnostically sufficient.

Harmful effects of usnic acid on hepatic metabolism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Usnic acid is a naturally occurring dibenzofuran derivative found in several lichen species. The compound has been marketed as an ingredient of food supplements for weight reduction.
